Ok here goes...just finishing up the Mobility Pilot Development program at the C-130 schoolhouse here at Little Rock AFB. 7 months and 2 checkrides and 1 fiancee later I am ready to leave TDY pay in hand. Anyway, since this new program has all of us brand new 2lt's checking in the left seat, we are receving not a co-pilot qual but our full up Mission Pilot form 8. With said form in hand I went down to the FSDO here and got my nice new L-whatever c-130 type rating.

So my question is this, the FAR's state that the PIC is the pilot who at the time is "the sole manipulator of the controls" and is typed for that airplane. So regardless of the fact that I do not carry the A code, can I log all my primary time since my check and in the future as PIC? The FAR's support this and I have a buddy who has spent way too much time looking into it who confirms it.

I know it doesn't really matter for the near future but those 600 hours or so before I upgrade would be nice...

Thought?

Vandal,

There are several definitions to PIC, there is the Part 61 Sole Manipulator side, there is the A-Code for Air Force dudes which mostly aligns with FAR Part 1 PIC definitions, and there is the whatever company you are applying to definition. Even if you log Part 1 PIC or AMC A-Code, you will probably end up re-calculating for each company because every one wants something different.

Sorry this doesn't help, but that is my .02

They gave the L-382 I believe...type? I am finishing up mission phase now. I thought they would not give it unless you are AC certified not qualified???

About PIC time.....do not count any of it until you sign for the aircraft. No straight-minded civilian company will count it, besides SWA, because you are not the pilot-in-command. We are glorified cps. Yes, I know we are FPs but we are just glorified cps. Look at the FAR PART I definition. Not part 61.

Here's the FAA's definition of PIC from FAR Part 1:

Pilot in command means the person who:
(1) Has final authority and responsibility for the operation and safety of the flight;
(2) Has been designated as pilot in command before or during the flight; and
(3) Holds the appropriate category, class, and type rating, if appropriate, for the conduct of the flight.

Until you're signing for the jet, I would caution you against logging anything other than "MP" or "IP" time as PIC. I looked into the very same thing and found that logging your flight time as PIC when your acting as a copilot might be considered shady to a future employer.

Most airlines recognize only PIC time as the FAA defines it. If you're wanting to pursue a job down the road, I would wait until you upgrade to log the PIC time. It won't take long....especially nowadays......

Good Luck.

OK cool guys so it sounds like you maybe are able to legally log one thing, but the companies can take whatever they want. Thx for the inputs...and Reddog you can get your type rating, you just need the form 8 from your qual check, and 10 hours of "PIC" since your check which is the part 61 definition for the type. At least according to the guy at the little rock FSDO that signs your ticket!

BTW, ridge crossing today, 300 AGL, 45 degrees of bank diving over into the valley on the other side... Now that was fun!

Did you get the type after the Initial qual or the mission phase? I am going through the J schoolhouse and did not get any flights in the aircraft during Initial qual, we did it all in the sim. I would assume it would be like any other type-ride in a sim.

After reading Part 61....in order to get the type-rating on a commercial certificate, you have to justify 10 hour of PIC time in order to get it, along with providing checkride results, etc. When you then read Part 61.73(g)(1 &2)..those with ATP certificates do not have to justify the 10 hours of PIC time to get the type-rating, just the checkride results and hold a category and class rating for the tpye of aircraft....blah,blah,blah. FYI for those who get asked to sign the form reguarding the 10 hours of PIC.

Vandal,

Good job on training.

Even though you are typed, if there is an accident who will they come after? You or the "A" code.

That is a simple way to figure out if you are really in command.

Also, I am type rated in the 757/767. Every time the captain left the cockpit didn't mean I could start logging PIC. He was still in charge.
