According to a bunch of my friends who were at NIFA Regionals at Salinas, CA and had asked the USAFA team first-hand, yes that's true. Also, they still use the original props and can overspeed in level flight.

I never got an explanation. They also took down the thread "TOTAL TOOL" which was devoted in its entirety to the dude in the avatar

I assume the tool that was in the picture complained.

I think everyone moves their aircraft this way. You frequently have to reposition the airplane over fairly long distances, at least longer than you would like to pull it by yourself with the Cessna tow bar. The safety judges never want to see an airplane moved in tight quarters without at least three people present.

...and the Academy guys might just be following Air Force regulations. Maybe they require wearing Nomex and protective headgear when flying any aircraft- be it an F-22 or a C-172.

The guy in the picture prob. wasn't AF or CAP, since he had an O2 mask hanging from his helmet, and was preflighting with the smoked visor down. Definite signs of Toolage.

I guess they wouldn't have liked my method of pushing down on the horizontal stab to reposition a 152 into a parking spot.

These guys were probably moving the aircraft several hundred feet. These airmeets usually have rules that don't allow anyone to taxi anywhere close to your eventual tiedown spot.
