I was asked to post this by a couple of the NJA instuctor pilots. I will make everything as vague as possible to protect the innocent.

There has been several incidents of people not studying after intial aircraft training and this has cost these newhires their jobs. We aren't talking about the how many static wicks are on the jet or how many rivits in the elevator. We are talking memory items and SOP's.

Granted you may have a few weeks off after intial sim training, but you still need to be in the books. The last incident one of the gentalmen told me about was someone had 3 or so weeks off before getting called back for aircraft training in CMH, and hadn't cracked a book in all that time. Bet he had cracked a beer or two though.

Things are tight in CMH and they aren't giving away many training flights there days, if the first one is messed up, there has to be a very good reason.

You can take this info however you want, but I was just asked to pass it on.

Thanks for the gouge. Why don't you post this on the 1108 board where more new hire type folks might actually read it? Just a suggestion.

I'm one of those guys going on two months since I finished my sim course. The training dept told me to expect company a/c training in late Aug, but that has changed about 3 times already in the last month.

I too have fallen into the trap of being a whole lot more lazy than I need to be concerning keeping up on my systems, memory items, and SOP. I'm starting today by setting some time aside every day and reviewing all the aforementioned items. Thanks for the heads up.

My buddys are going to do it, and they figured that not all new hires have board access or know how to get on the board, yet....
 
Its all falling apart. Before you know it the whole bunch will wash out. Before I get jumped on just kidding.
 
I know when I ran into that scenerio while doing IOE.

ME. "Did you get an NJA paycheck between Sim and IOE?"
 
It's nice of you to give a heads up, but come on.....If you go to a/c training without knowing your Emergency Memory Items and Limitations, you are pretty weak. You also don't deserve the job in the first place. Nothing wrong with encouraging people to study, though.

Except that it does happen. When I go to FSI, I do study before I go there to avoid looking like an idiot. Not to judge anyone else, but last class there was a guy who I am pretty sure didnt do too much studying. Maybe he just didnt get a chance to do so or didnt have the time.

When you have to study, does the company give you study pay? What, your union has not arranged this for you? No wonder people dont want to study. Too much work, not enough pay for it.

No study = you are not a professional. Plain and simple.
 
nah. I had 3 or 4 weeks and it was the best thing to happen. I find it easier to have the "breather" and this gives time to actually make sense of all the stuff you just did.
I found the AC training and IOE really easy though. Maybe because I actually DID study....
 
Is the level of training/difficulty on par with Part 121 carriers? Just curious as to what to expect if/when I get hired. Still awaiting the interview email, I have been in the pool for PBI since early Feb.

NJA vs Regional Airlines: NJA MUCH easier. Not because the training is poor, but because they focus, for the most part, on the essential knowledge needed to perform safely in an airplane. NJA does not want you to BUILD THE AIRPLANE, like the regional/retarded airlines.

If you have been to a major (legacy) airline, it's about the same intensity as that.

Safety.....yes, we get study pay. Here is the deal: you call in on your day off and tell them that you are beginning to study your FSI manual at such and such time. The clock starts ticking and depending on the class of aircraft, that determines the pay per hour. In the excel, our contract has 50$ an hour of study time. If we do sample WB problems, thats an additional 10$/hr as well. When we are done, we simply call up and have them shut us off the clock. Additionally, if we are studying on our day off, that also counts as an extended day and at my rate that runs about 800$ a day.

At Flex our study time doesn't start till one hour after we call in, it stops one hour before we call in. We only get 12.32 hr for training, unless you are TEB based then you get 10.38 hr. You are limited to just 16 hrs of study time, however if you study on your last day off you will not be paid, because you will be paid the next day.
 
I think it's cool that you guys get study pay, but don't expect a med student to have sympathy for ya!
