I went to go apply for a passport at my local town hall, and on top of the fee I need to pay the State Department, they want $30. Is that normal, or are they trying to make a buck?

I got my British one renewed last year by mailing it to the Embassy in D.C. - that was about $100 and it was FedEx back in 3 days. That was an usually quick and painless.

Yeap, thats correct. Like Aviatrix said the post office charges $60, and the government fee is $30.

This was within the last 60 days as well.

The post office isn't the "government"?
