Just saw the information on the mods that Piasecki is making to the Blackhawk - small wings for lift instead of just hard points for ordnance, and a ringtailed pusher propellor instead of a conventional tailrotor. Speed jumps from 150 to 225 and range triples. MV-22 performance is claimed at a fraction of the price. Does anybody have any knowledge of this? Saw it on both the piasecki website and aviationnow.com

Hello,
Sounds like they are re-inventing the wheel. About 30 years ago the Army tested an aircraft called the "Cheyenne" however, it was designed as a gunship, but never made it passed the test stage before it was killed during the Carter Administration.
The Osprey is a huge political football and I think that the fleet really wanted an aircraft of a more conventional nature. This coupled with the AH-1/UH-1 mod program being jammed down there throats has really made a mess of USMC rotary wing aviation for the next 10 or so years. They should have bought either a large buy of Blackhawks or a mix of Blackhawks and S-92s.

Just my .02 cents,
