Those recordings are insane. Espically the "Land on the green dot" crap. How exactly does that work?

"classic mooney"

you can almost hear the "who the **** cares," in the controller's voice.

;)

They paint several (3-4) large colored circles at various points along rwy 9-27... they are colored.... your landing clearance often includes which dot to touch town on.

Why? Well, the separation rules are different; they can clear 2,3 maybe 4 aircraft to land at once, at different parts of the runway. You're expected to clear the runway asap, turning off into the grass instead of a taxiway... its great!!

All that radio chatter sounds impressive but I bet if atc went nordo there would not be a big aluminum fireball. A lot of it is superfluous gabbing.
The biggest provider of separation is people reading and following the notamed procedure, then looking outside and adjusting your airplane for traffic.

Gravity, if it were all traffic following the ripon arrival at a single altitude, landing on a single runway, I would agree with you.. what changed my mind was seeing them work departures between that stream as well as conduct operations on the crossing runway (like 30+ Mooneys landing in a continuous stream) and then the vintage and ultralight airfields on top of that. I think the ATC there can't be beat.

I fly into Oshkosh every year since I live an hr away by air. I have the whole sequence filmed from inside the cockpit from beginning to end. I will upload it on a server for all to see. It is a must do at least once in your life, read the NOTAM thoroughly and you shouldn't get into trouble. It is actually very easy. The video is pretty cool as well as the pics. When I get the time I will add them to my Yahoo account.
