So I have been flying with this guy (Mike Hayes) for the last 6 months getting him current on his CFI ticket. He flies a couple of times a month and always asks me to have some very hard aviation related questions for him when he arrives. He has the correct answer for me everytime!

Two weeks ago, he finally tells me that he is the one that wrote all the oral prep guides for ASA. WOW!!!

He was a CFI at the time back in the 80's-90's and needed to make more money. He wrote the oral prep thinking he could sell them to his students and possibly to others.

Low and behold ASA approached him and offered to buy the rights and he sold.

Looking back, he should of asked for royalities like a dollar per book. He would be very wealthy.

Great guy, and every pilot seeking ratings probably have read his stuff.

I will show him this thread if anyone has a question or to say Thanks!

The DPE that did my ICFI asked if I had "that yellow ASA book" right when we started the oral portion. He said he hopes they never change the bindings in those books, he knows he'll likely fail the applicant (private, instrument, commercial, cfi) if pages aren't dirty, dog-eared, and falling out.

The binding of mine was broke and my pages were falling out... I passed;)

I can not believe it took me 6 months to put 2+2 together.

He is very shy about the whole thing. When I let other people know, he tells me its no big deal. He should of gone to the airlines, but finacial obligations kept him from moving on.

if he is making good money with his guides, "going to the airlines" is not a "promotion" by any means

not today

my advice to a wanna-be airline pilot, become wealthy and buy a Bonanza

I think he sold it outright with no royalities. He recieves nothing now.

He worked for ASA on the ramp line for many years and was layed off when Delta closed shop in Dallas last year.

We are trying to get him as a CFI at our flight school, but he only wants to be part time, which I understand.

My hats off to this gentleman! He is hugely responsible for getting me through my ratings, and more importantly helping me understand in a SIMPLIFIED manner some of the points that are like greek when reading in the text book.

My Private and Instrument books have the pages falling out of them they've been used so much.

next time you go flying with him, tell him thanks from me. seriously.

What a great guy, very down to earth.

He taught out of Arlington and Grand Praire during the 80's-90's.

Great pilot, should of stuck with it. Late 40's now and I told him there is still time. He has around 2300 hrs. and I keep telling him he should get current and apply. There is still time.

His knowledege is unbelieveable and his flying skills are still in tack.

What do you all think!
