This is nothing new. While I was there a couple of knucklehead classmates climbed the airport fence, broke into a Navy H-3 that was down from NIP visiting and stole the crew's helmets. They got caught when they tried to mail the helmets home.

Now this seems a lot stupider than trying to lift a gator... Is breaking into an airport and/or stealing government property a felony?
