Yes to the crappy advisor part- here's how to get around that...
Distance learning students can register for classes through the University's advisors, or go through a center. Have your counselor/advisor inform you of your local center, then have him/her send your paperwork to the center. You'll never have to deal the university directly again - the center staff will handle EVERYTHING. You'll be able to register in person or over the phone, actually have questions answered, problems solved, etc.
