Dick Rutan did it on a shoestring in a piston airplane 18 years ago. He had a passenger, but she didn't touch the controls. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is he stayed up and flew the whole dang thing.

Mr. Fossett gets a lot more credit for the balloon thing. ANY professional pilot could have flown this flight with those kind of resources.
