OK I give up. Why do CRJ spoilers click instead of a smooth motion

They click into place to allow the passengers to realize the jackass flying doesn't know how to plan his descent properly.
Really? When was the last time you flew on the east coast?
All day long we get "Decend at best rate, maintain 210kts."
 
I've been wondering on and off why the CRJ engineers put the seemingly inexplicable "click" system in the spoiler system, making for unnecessarily choppy spoiler deploy and stow cycles? I've often thought (while staring out the window during the Captain's introductory briefing), about what the possible reason could be, and I have yet to come up with an answer.

So, I figured those of you who have more stripes than I do might know.

So that you know you actually moved the spoilers by a set of increments. The MD-80 spoilers are much heavier and noisier...
