NEW YORK - Oil refiners cut fuel production in some states this week to counter slipping profit margins, drawing fire from critics already incensed by soaring gasoline prices and Big Oil's recent record profits.

San Antonio-based Valero Energy Corp., the nation's largest fuel producer, said Tuesday it slowed output from its refinery in Ohio by more than 10 percent for economic reasons, even as the company announced its 10th straight quarter of record earnings.

Earlier in the week, British energy giant BP slashed fuel production from its refinery in Whiting, Ind., by 10 to 15 percent because of lower profit margins in the region, market sources said. BP declined to comment.

U.S. gasoline prices averaged $2.34 a gallon Tuesday, nearly 50 cents higher than a year ago.

Oil refiners traditionally slow fuel production when profit margins fall into the red — something that happens when the cost of crude rises too high relative to the selling price of gasoline and heating oil.

The National Petrochemical and Refiners Association, which represents several U.S. oil companies, said the slowdown by some refiners is not a threat to the nation's supply and should be seen as a normal seasonal variation.

"Inventories in that part of the country are high and pipelines are full," the association said in a prepared statement.

Politicians and consumer groups set off a fresh wave of calls for special taxes against Big Oil after Exxon Mobil Corp. on Monday posted a record profit of $10.7 billion in the latest quarter and more than $36 billion for the year.

Or could it possibly be that refiners understand if they don't flood the market with product there will be more money/margin/profit for everyone. A concept completely lost on airlines.

You know, I was pissed when I first heard of the cutback.

But then, I think you are completely right in your assumption!

I'm getting tired of our Walmart economy where everything needs to cost 50 cents. Let's start charging what things are worth and start making some money.

We don't love Wal-MArt??? MAde in the USA----oh no daddy's died---MADE IN CHINA!!!!

GAS PRICES?? LETS see and WE LOVE BUSH too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Give him a BJ so we can impeach him too

Opec cuts back production you guys scream bloody murder! The Oil execs in the US cut back production and you guys rush in to pat them on the back!

I hope your airline has its fuel hedges in place, cause if they don't, its coming straight out of your pocket right into the hands of big oil.

Really? The news tonight said that United reduced capacity 20 percent to become more profitable. Now that's corruption, the greedy crooks. United should be increasing capacity and making it cheaper for people to buy airline tickets, flooding the market so the economy can grow.

There's a big difference, United's losing money and Big oil is making money hand-over-fist at everyone's expense. Have you ever heard of an Oligopoly or maybe Anti-Trust laws?

This hardly passes for oligopoly. You forget. Oil and it's derivatives are traded on the open market as commodities. How about being P O'd at those trading those futures?

What about the Chinese and the Indians? Shouldn't we be mad at them as well? Hugo Chavez?

I'm surprised at the amount of Socialistic tendencies expressed here. If the airlines were nationalized most of us would be out of work. Failed business models aside, we're all employed because of Capitalism.

If you don't like Exxon, Walmart, or gas-guzzling auto makers don't buy their product.

So let me get this straight. Our country sucks down the vast majority of the worlds oil. Rather than looking at the consumption side we get pissed off at anybody in the supply chain making money.

Well if you were a fat person who couldn't walk and got stuck in my house... I would charge you $100 dollars a cheeseburger. After about a week of that I would make it $200. You could yell at me and hate me but at the end of the day you would give me another $200 for a cheeseburger.

So enjoy it you fat f!cks. We made the problem and Iran, Saudi, Hugo, Exon, Oshama, etc... are all laughing all the way to the bank.

Big oil can't be held responsible for the mis-management of airlines. That's like employees blaming their employer because the weren't forced to save in the 401K program.

Overcapacity at the airlines was factor two years before 9/11 and they played fiddle while Rome burned.

This isnt news. Did you figure this out back in Sept. when oil companies boasted record profits with record prices? Your right though. Its too bad that airline manager types are total morons and wont raise ticket prices. A group of preschoolers could run an airline better then most of the people currently doing it and the best part is they dont know what a corporate bonus is.

Thats why WAR is GOOD. Take it and keep so we can drive for a cheaper price! It all comes down to resources and what we need. If we can't get it, lets take it!

-a hint of sarcasm !

Yeah except we go to war and stagger production. I was hoping that the one thing we would get right in Iraq was the oil. I would be willing to bet if we told Exon to invade... Iraq would be in a civil war. Bagdad would be a shambles. And oil would be a few dollars cheaper. Quite frankly I'm ok with that scenario.

So let me get this straight. The demand for oil is huge, big Oil is making record profits, they cut back production to raise prices further, and you guys rush in to defend them. Your airline or flight department is a big customer of Big Oil, right?

So when management rushed in to take lets say 20%, 50% or maybe 100% of your wages you were supportive right? Because you knew that your lost wages would be going to directly to support Big Oils need for larger profits at your expense? They are after all, entitled to make as much money as they want, right?

Second, a question for all of you Econ experts out there. Many of you state that if your airline would just raise the price, all of your problems would be solved, I ask you how do you do this with overcapacity?

Airline A xyz to yyz $40

Airline B xyz to yyz $40

Airline C xyz to yyz $40

Your airline xyz to yyz $55

Now who do you exactly think is going to fly your airline? It's a crappy position to be in, but do you charge at $40 and fill up the plane and lose $4 on each seat or do you charge $55 and fly a plane around empty and lose $55 dollars on each seat? This game is going to be played until your airline and a few other airlines runs out of cash and the market corrects itself to where supply equals demand.

I'm not sure I follow any link between "Big Oil" managment and airline managment. However, I wish my airline had Exxon's problem.

Whine whine whine.

I love what big oil is doing. As my buddy Gordon Gekko says, "it's all about the bucks kid."

This is America. Love it or leave it buddy.
