Odd Technique on B-350 King Air

I know a guy like this but he flew a 200. IT DROVE ME INSANE. Mostly just the reverse part...out of the corner of my eye I would watch the passengers lurch forward and back. It was embarrassing. I took great pride in NOT doing it when I flew.

Piedmont DC-3 landing on grass strip...flaps retract on landing roll out. Neat video.
Pulling the flaps up on touchdown in a DC-3 is pretty much standard practice. Overwise with a slight increase in AOA it will start flying again. With flaps down the C-47 will come off the ground at around 50 Kts with the tail down, Vmca is 76 Kts. BTW Maybe this guy started flying 3's?

you shouldnt touch anything until clear of the runway.
unless it is a recommended and trained procedure, that does not involve a configuration changer.

Yep - makes sense.
 
While I disagree with the practice... there are some operators that believe every landing should be 'Maximum Braking/Shortest Landing & Stoping Distance' .... I have heard there are some airline operators that disiplne pilots who do not make certain turn-offs at certain airports... Could have been some drunk airline guy making stuff up at the Embassy Happy Hour but its what he said.

I prefer not to wear planes out and not to scare my pax ;)
 
Nothing more than ground fine is necessary for most normal landings in the B350 (and all the KA's I've flown)....I suppose flaps up landings or operations into extremely short runways would be a couple of exceptions. It just makes a lot of noise and kicks up dirt/fod....there just isn't much benefit to using reverse at the normal touchdown speeds of the airplane.

Raising the flaps on the landing roll is goofy.

I agree. I have lots of single pilot time in a 350 and ground fine works great for most landings.
 
I contract in all manner of King Airs and have run into the flaps up upon touchdown quite a bit. I comment that it's not the best practice due to distraction, asym flap retract, and not needed but to no avail. People do what they want regardless of the facts. Same folks are probably still putting butter on burns and peeing on poison ivy.

Side note, I flew with a guy in a Caravan who approached at flaps 20 then at about 10 agl would pull flaps to 10; not smart but he claimed it made smoother landings. Some folks are weird.
