The NYC Door man Union just announced that it has reached a deal with the city to make the base salary for all Door men $38,000 with 2.5% raises each year. Sort of makes you feel like crap when a door man is making more than most of the FO's around the industry... Sad, Just Sad.

Well, that's the situation we have. We've had year after year and contract after contract where junior level F.O. payscales have been nothing better than an afterthought.

But in reality, $38K in NYC is actually less money (considering cost of living) than your average F.O. making 25K...

What if you're an FO IN NYC.? like ewr, lga, jfk etc..

So how about the poor FO's based in NY, LA, ORD, MIA, ATL etc etc. Not all are living in the sticks so $38,000 still beats $25,000

Well, then you're screwed...

Doesn't say much for ALPA does it ???

What about CHQ FO's? Great Lakes FO's? GauxJet FO's? Horizon FO's? Heck, what does a starting UPS pilot make? All of these carriers are non-ALPA. It isn't an "ALPA problem." It is a "pilot problem." We all are willing to work for less in the first few years with hopes of making more downstream. We all are our own worst enemies. Myself included.

I'm going to guess that many at least double that with tips.........

NEW YORK — The city's doormen reached a tentative agreement with building owners early Friday, avoiding a walkout that could have forced tens of thousands of apartment dwellers to take out their own trash and carry their own groceries.

The end is near.

That's funny...I live in NYC, have a doorman, and I take out my own trash and also carry my own groceries. Oddly enough, that report is inaccurate. Doormen don't carry groceries or take out trash.

What exactly do they do, outside of opening the door?

short sighted. What's their salary cap? What's ours? Starting out sucks, but hey soon we should be making more right! Think positive.

Yea, wait 'til the next contract!!!

Reminds me of Loui Anderson in Coming To America (with Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall) when he says:

See I'm washing lettuce, soon I'll be on fries and then the grill. Couple years from now I'll make asst. manager, and that's when the BIG BUCKS start rolling in!

I have heard that being a doorman can be a very good career.

However, I have heard alot of the doormen complaining about staffing issues. Many doormen are getting junior manned and reassigned on a regular basis do to lack of other doormen. :D

Security, accept packages, dry cleaning, laundry, etc. It is a luxury no doubt but there are all different kinds of buildings that have doormen. Some are nicer than others. Some are huge luxurious buildings with multiple doormen on staff and big front desks, etc. They even have elevator men as well. Others are small buildings where the doorman sits on a stool right by the door and the door is only manned at certain hours.

The porters are also represented by the SEIU and they are the ones who work the trash compactors, clean the buildings, do minor maintenance, etc.

I know how ridiculous this all sounds but until you've spent some time in NYC or lived here, it is hard to understand why doormen can be so important. Being away so much, I love having one.

I might start swingin' a hammer pretty soon for $25-$30 hour plus O/T.

What's the source for this and why did they make a deal with the city? Aren't they employed by the building or a "doorman company"? Just curious, cause then pilots should be able to collectively negotiate a national minimum wage right?
