If you listen to the analysts, NWA is in better shape financially for the long term. That would way heavily in my decision.

I would consider both outfits as stepping stones to UPS, FexEx or SWA.

Working conditions at both are unpleasant and unstable. In the end, pick one with a base near where you want to live.

It's very difficult to figure out what is the best thing to do.

I dunno. Everything I've seen and heard points to management at NWA not really wanting to run an airline, versus an outsourcing coordinator.

NWA is heading into one of those times of transition, where it really takes men of talent and vision to move the company into better times. Failing that, there will simply be a slow slide into oblivion, al la TWA.

Many of NWA's core "strategic assets" are being either part and parceled out, or simply left to die on the vine.

NWA's core midwestern "fortress" is being outsourced to Compass. Stations that have been served by NWA aircraft (or Southern, North Central, Republic, etc) since the late 1920s are being abandoned to outsourcing.

NWA's freighter fleet is in dire need of upgrade, with nothing on the horizon.

Same story with the -9s'. IMHO, NWA will NEVER have another 100 seater, and the A319s are next on the chopping block.

The move into point-to-point Atlantic service with the 757 has long since lost momentum, and in fact has mostly been sidelined by the catestrophic pilot shortage this summer.

NWA's position in the pacific has long been protected by it's fifth freedom rights in NRT, as well as the duopoly with UAL. But, with open skies in Asia looming, NWA would be VERY hard pressed to compete with the slick, state supported Asian operators. Of course, UAL is in somewhat of the same boat.

There are airlines out there to compare. If you look at CAL, they had a vision, starting several years ago, to become the largest operator over the Atlantic. Everything they did showed that they were interested in running a airline, and moving to the future.

NWA, and UAL (the perennial rudderless ship), OTOH, simply seem to be treading water until the next bankruptcy.

If you live in MSP, MEM or DTW, I say go for it. Nothing beats an easy drive to the airport, and there is a lot of abuse I would personally accept to live in base. But keep your eye on the prize.

But if you commute, there are far better, career oriented opportunities out there.
