I found this on the yahoo chat boards. I guess NWA is declaring war on a weaker Midwest Express. Anyone know anything?

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/1086769/

“Beginning July 1, NW will add nonstop service to BOS, DCA, LGA, LAS, LAX and MCO from MKE. Flights will operate once daily and complement existing service to DTW, MEM and MSP (the number of flights / size of equipment will not change).

flights to Milwaukee begin July 1 (but do not operate on Saturdays+)
flights from Milwaukee begin July 2 (but do not operate on Sundays+)
+flights to/from Las Vegas and Orlando operate daily
flights to/from BOS, DCA, LGA and LAS operate with A319, flights to/from LAX and MCO with A320...”

From the same post:
NW0888 departs Milwaukee 7:20AM, arrives Boston 10:35AM
NW0887 departs Boston 7:40PM, arrives Milwaukee 9:15PM

NW0636 departs Milwaukee 7:05AM, arrives Washington-National 10:00AM
NW0637 departs Washington-National 7:30PM, arrives Milwaukee 8:30PM

NW1096 departs Milwaukee 6:30AM, arrives New York-LaGuardia 9:35AM
NW1095 departs New York-LaGuardia 7:40PM, arrives Milwaukee 9:05PM

NW0669 departs Milwaukee 8:30AM, arrives Las Vegas 9:20AM
NW0668 departs Las Vegas 11:10AM, arrives Milwaukee 4:30PM

NW0985 departs Milwaukee 5:45PM, arrives Los Angeles 8:00PM
NW0984 departs Los Angeles 5:30PM, arrives Milwaukee 11:15PM

NW1853 departs Milwaukee 7:00AM, arrives Orlando 10:35AM
NW1852 departs Orlando 6:30PM, arrives Milwaukee 8:15PM

They cherry picked what one would assume to be the highest yielding flying - save MCO and LAS. Not an MEH killer, I don't think, just a very large redtailed fly in the ointment.

Thats interesting, I didn't think ME would be such a threat to NWA. ME has its faithfull following and nitch market. So I guess we'll see. The following is just my opinion but here's some comments on ME.

I think they have a great product and there are people out there willing to pay more to fly on them because it is so comfortable. They are my first choise to JS if their going my way (I have broad shoulders, 54 coat size so even thou my butt fits in a standard coach seat my shoulders always spill over, I hate dead heading) but thats just it, IMHO they need to be based/hubbed in New York or some other large city at the hart of the US economy/bussiness/govt. center. If they were based in NY and flew to Chicago, BOS, DCA, Texas, Florida and other large business cities/states I think that they'd do and be doing just fine as lond as they don't get too big.

I have many old rugby friends (read big guys) that are brokers/lawyers/accountants/analysts in New York. Some of them travel quite a bit and use U and DAL to get around. They always bitch to me about the space in coach (like I have anything to do with it) and that they'd pay for first class but its usually filled. Some have flown ME and they love it but ME never goes where their going, unless they want to go all the way to MKE to get somewhere else.

Anyway what I'm saying is IMHO again, ME has a great product and a willing following of people (not a huge groupe but enough) that will pay (when I saw pay more, I mean 2 to 3 hundred more than a coach ticket, not super mega bucks more) for this kind of service, but they need to get out of MKE and the other hub and move to where the people are and then fly to where these people want to go directly.

I'd geuss a fleet of 30 717's or A319/320's, set up like ME has their a/c now (longer range) serving (out of LGA, good luck getting slots) ORD, CVG, STL, DEN, DAL, HOU, ATL, TPA, MIA, FLL, MCO, CLT, LAX, SFO, SEA and any other money city where the east coast/New York business guy needs to go and dosent want to be squashed or pay first class $$ all the time. I think the key would be keeping the airline sized just right for the demand of the select group that wants this product along with obviously keeping every other cost in check as we've all learned in the last few years.

Another thing nix the meal crapola, just provide safe, reliable, service (with seats normal people can fit in) at or near the time they want to fly to where they want to go and presto - an airline that has a nich market and stays in bussiness (as long as the Pilot and other emplyee groups dont get greedy (read US AIR) and the CEO dosn't rape the company and walk away), I think.

Comments anyone?

Greedy, like US Air???

You say don't get greedy like US Air???? It seems to me that if we all work for Mesa wages, there will be someone else ready to lop off 10% and call us greedy. Have you ever thought about the fact that even some regional pilots make 100K is mostly due to the fact that the major pilot corps had previously been successful in ensuring that a captain in a major airliner is a career, not just a job. If you think that less top end pay will make for a successful career, I disagree. Give the industry another couple of years to shake out and even most of the regionals will be saying the reason ACA is in trouble is their pilots got greedy. Just MHO.
