Delta-Northwest deal may finally get off the ground
Reports pilots have reached a tentative deal might mean a merger is imminent

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Pilots from Northwest and Delta Air Lines have reportedly come to enough of an agreement over how to integrate their seniority lists that a merger between the two airlines can finally move forward, various media outlets reported Friday.

As already reported, a deal between the airlines has been in limbo since January because pilots couldn't come to an amicable compromise on seniority, which ultimately determines the size of a pilot's paycheck. Delta has said it wouldn't agree to a merger until its workforce was fully on board.
On Friday, Credit Suisse raised its rating for Delta and Northwest to outperform from neutral in part because of a tentative agreement between pilots, giving the green light on a merger deal the investment firm said is imminent.
"Given the risk of standalone plans in the current volatile macro environment, [we] believe a Northwest-Delta deal has become a strategic imperative for both carriers, with or without a labor deal," wrote Daniel McKenzie, an analyst with Credit Suisse.
Analysts have said that with fuel prices as high as they are, airlines like Northwest and Delta will need to find ways to park their older and more expensive aircraft from their fleets and shut down poor-performing hub connections. A deal between Delta-Northwest deal will presumably all the surviving company more flexibility to do just that, though it's unclear how long it will take before the savings would have an impact to profit and cash flow.

If any Delta pilots are furloughed because of NWA DC9s being parked, I think there will be a lot of people upset at Moak.

Good news if it's true, much better than go it alone throw NWALPA under the bus along the way negotiations. This is being forced fed to us, we need to remember that the other guy's mec isn't the enemy. Kumbya, kumbya.....everyone now: Take a DEEP breath, save our energy for management. This needs to go down smoothly or a great number of us will be on the streets from both sides.

SON OF A B#$@H!

Sorry guys. I sympathize.

Good Luck.

Scope... If this was precipitated by relaxing scope, well you know who to blame... With our scope, it's hard for them to park DC9s. Don't know with DAL's contract.

Hopefully this wont result in too many furloughs. I think when it all shakes out we're still looking at 500 to 1000 on the street...uhhhg....

So, what incentives are both pilot groups entitled to now? Do they still get the raises, equity, etc.? What will be the impact on the two groups if this actually comes to fruition?

Does this mean you're willing (and ok with) throwing me and others under the bus? Should we get furloughed over, say..., a Delta guy that just started class this week?

Hopefully there are no furloughs, I've already been through one. If it's a done deal, lets fight together to keep everyone on property.

DAL's scope will have to be so wide and big that they can operate NWA as a subsidiary if the news reports are correct.

The problem with that is NWA's scope isn't. Despite the DAL talking points, the NWA contract is binding on the holding company as well as NWA, irregardless of how the transaction occurs.

Additionally, orders AND options are locked in during any transaction. No snaking the 787s away.

So, sure, it can work this way, but only if you guys sell all of your airplanes and operate only 50 seaters.
