NWA's Cargo Unit Cuts Fuel Surcharges As Costs Fall

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
September 8, 2008 11:45 a.m.

The cargo unit of Northwest Airlines Corp. (NWA) announced its second decrease in fuel surcharges in as many months, as the shipper moves to reverse a series of increases amid recent declines in the price of jet fuel.

The move comes as shippers struggle to retain customers that have been fleeing jet-fuel surcharges by shifting their loads to less-expensive trucks. A number of carriers, including Singapore Airlines Ltd. (C6L.SG) and Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LHA.XE) on Monday, have been reducing their surcharges.

Effective Sept. 15, NWA Cargo said its surcharges for all domestic shipments will be reduced from 50 cents to 46 cents a pound. Meanwhile, surcharges for shipments from the U.S. to and from a variety of overseas locals will be cut 8.3%.
