Anyone know how many people can fly? (ie 1 out of every 1,000 people, 1 in 500..., ect) I remember hearing it somewhere but can't seem to find anything on it again.

Thanks.

Seal believes he can.

Number of active pilots

As of 2004, there were 618,633 active pilots, according the FAA. This number has been declining slowly over the long term, down from a high of over 827,000 pilots in 1980. The 2004 numbers include:
  • 87,910 student pilots
  • 235,994 private pilots
  • 122,592 commercial pilots
  • 142,160 airline transport pilots
  • 29,977 other pilot certificates (includes helicopter [only] and glider [only], and recreational pilot certificates).

So..... using propilot's numbers and assuming a 300 mil U.S. pop., that's one pilot for every 484 folks in the good ol' USA.

Sexy as all get-out.

"Honey, I am one in four hundred and eighty-four."

"That's nice, go do the dishes."

"Ok."

Theres AOPA's data, also broken down to state.

The data by year since 1929.

Interesting to see that the number of pilots is going down rather drastically (especially when you consider population growth). ATP numbers are continuing to rise while new student numbers are taking the biggest hit. Also, we now have roughly the same number of CFIs as students, compared to a 1:7 ratio in 1968.

Where da students at? Actually the AOPA does have a great program for getting people interested in flying started, the Be A Pilot Program.

Yeah, a Catch 22! Less students means more CFIs starve, but then again less pilots to compete with for a job and it should create a demand for more pilots which in turn may increase what pilots earn. Or do I have that all backwards... ?

Maybe we need Leonardo Dicaprio to make some more flying movies?

Looking at the accident stats, you have to wonder if any of the licensed pilots 'can fly'!

No kidding. Giving BFRs and Instrument comp rides can scare the hell out of ya.
