Northwest To Recall Some Laid-Off Pilots (Minneapolis Star-Tribune) Northwest Airlines plans to call some furloughed pilots back to work in 2004, but the pilots union said Tuesday that many of those laid-off pilots will replace retiring pilots. Northwest has furloughed 928 pilots and a few of those pilots will return to work in April, according to the Northwest unit of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA). About 5,500 pilots are currently flying Northwest aircraft. The airline substantially reduced its pilot workforce after the 2001 terrorist attacks, and Northwest has reported losses of about $1.3 billion since early 2001.Star Tribune Article
