I've talked with several pilots, CAL, NWA and others that are going to try to pass up to like 10 years total (including furlough) to get mil retirements and then go back. You can pass 3 months at a time as long as the company allows, or if you have a legitimate contract, you can go longer.
As to loving NWA, I personally do. The people there are real. I could give several examples, but for me the fit works. Being in the mil you see what airlines hire who, and there is no one GREAT airline to work for, there are slight personality quirks. I know quite a few people at SWA and some are outstanding, and some are people I'll never miss. JBLU hired one of the biggest jerks I've ever worked for, but one of the greatest people I ever knew works for JBLU.
For me company you work for is only as good as the person you are on a trip with. For that matter, is one of the reasons I like NWA. You have a bad trip, it is only one trip and you never have to see the guy again if you don't like. Although I've never needed to exercised that option.
$ isn't a big deal to me time off is so any of the majors would do. I've been on the whale, 3 holer and bus. The bus and whale were GREAT with 2 COMPLETELY different lifestyles. Cargo out of ANC and passenger in the lower 48. I loved the fact that I don't have to work for Fedex or SWA for the rest of my life, but I can swap between the 2 throughout my career. I don't want to fly 80+ hours a month, so JBLU really wouldn't have done it for me, although, I went out and bought their stock because I believe in their product. And not that I'd turn down a job with JBLU, but in the long run I don't think that would be for me.
But then again, I'm a happy and content type of person. I didn't mind being furloughed in the slightest. When else was I going to have to opportunity to kick my wife out the door to be the breadwinner and stay home and play Mr. Mom. I have until 60/65 whatever to fly for an airline. When else was I gong to be able to stay home and REALLY get to know my kids. This is rather typical of NWA people though, from what I've seen we make the best of things.
