Does NOAA hire pilots off the street or do they come form other branches of NOAA?
Thanks

Pilots for NOAA are commissioned officers in the NOAA Corps (considered one of the service branches). This means Basic Training and all that fun stuff. I would bet you would have to spend some time on a boat before you could try for a flying gig. Getting desperate for a flying job huh? lol.

Hi all,

They DO recruit "off the street", BUT looking over their stuff, it seems that to fly for the NOAA corp, you might need a lot of luck, and be willing to pull sea duty.

Their requirements say you can have any degree, but if you read between the lines, it would need to be in some sort of science or engineering for them to look at you, and it would have to be in marine biology or some other serious envriomental science to make it in. It looks like that they want serious science people first, and if you can fly, thats just a bonus.

You have to put in two years of sea duty before you get your flying shot. If you like the sea, SCUBA diving, nature and/or Alaska, it might suit you. They DO have some neat AC, from P-3s and G-4s to Lake Amphibs.

But don't let my worthless rant stop you. Give it a shot! You can't win if you don't play.

You might have more opportunity with a similar set-up with the Coast Guard.
You learn some neat stuff on the internet. I didn't know that NOAA was one of the 7 uniformed services, nor did I know that the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) was the other (beyond the 5 well known branches).
