Many of the threads center on the disfuntional relationship between the labor groups and managment. I found it interesting to see the following quote by Southwest Airline's CEO in regards to its employees. With this atitude, no wonder SWA is so successful...

DALLAS, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Southwest Airlines' (NYSE: LUV) 10,000 Customer Service and Reservation Agents represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW), today ratified an agreement extending their contract through November 2008. The contract will include pay increases and stock options.

"Our Employees have, once again, shown their commitment to the future of Southwest Airlines," said CEO and Vice Chairman of the Board Jim Parker. "The success and profitability of Southwest Airlines has meant job security, growth, and Profitsharing for our Employees, and I believe our Employees are determined to continue that success. We are blessed to have the most dedicated, caring, and entrepreneurial group of Employees in the world," Parker said.

Bally,

Not sure if I missed you on the list, but where do your interview and type dates place you in the pool? Just curious, I was told last month, that I'd probably be in the third class, but a small chance of the second..

My Wife just had a baby girl (my baby).

Jim and Colleen sent us a Lenox crystal winne the pooh as a gift & a card.

Flight Ops in Dallas sent us a card

My Pilot base sent us flowers

I was not expecting any of this? I've been told that more stuff may come in the mail from SWAPA (our union) and other departments. I thought this was so cool. I was thinking no other airline would have done this? (not now anyway, with the market like this). It feels like one big family! I'm very happy to be here.

I just wanted to pass this story on...

SWA/FO,

Congratulations! I hope all is well with mom and the baby girl...and you, also. Take care and God Bless.

Thanks guys!

"I was thinking no other airline would have done this?"

Hey, thats not true...I've had two kids since I've been with my company. When I had my last one the company actually let me off Reserve a couple of hours early from ORD where I was involuntarily TDYed to fly home to NJ to be with my wife for her planned C-section. I was overwhelmed with their kindness...:D :D

Congrats on your baby. And I never thought I'd say this but, I agree that SWA certainly does look like a nice place to work right now.

Semper Fi, the 'Sheep' and Scooters forever!!

Congratulations, SWA/FO....

Little girls are great. She'll be all "yours" until age 14, then you'll take a back seat to all those gangly youths milling about the neighborhood.;)

All the best.

Congrats! and great story. That is the reason I chose SWA. The reason, at least to me, it isn't always about the money. Some people see it, some don't.

This is of the flight ops newline for 3/7/03:

Jim Parker announced this week during his Message to the Field that the Company's contribution to our Profit Sharing Plan would be $71 million. This equates to approximately 5% of your income for 2002. As you know this is remarkable during these uncertain times for our industry. The plan will be funded in mid September 2003. Thanks for what you do everyday to keep us safe and profitable.

Very nice

That's a great story, and quite impressive. My wife and I are due to have our first child on April 9. You know what our airline is doing for us? Dropping our insurance coverage.

I'm used to this......I worked for a major US AIRline.

It seems to me that most of the flailing majors that want to arise from the ashes should take a lesson from SWA. Not necessarily in their business model, which is obviously very sound, but instead in the way they treat their people. Success breeds success!

Good luck SWA! I hope to join your ranks one day if only I could upgrade to captain and get that 1000PIC turbine!
