Hey guys...regarding CASS...lets say one doesn't have a passport for a week or so. Can said individual still "jumpseat" but only ride in the cabin?

I would think so since I've carried non-cass in the past and they rode in the back.

My passport is due Feb 08...in the old days, I was able to stand in line and get it that day...I know I can still goto one of the passport offices, but I don't know if I can get it in hand that same day.

Anyone else run into this potential problem.

I jumpseat on Delta and Airtan...

Better yet, use your congressman and express service and get you passport back in three days

I almost got stranded in ORD by UAL due to a passport expiring. I wasn't in the CASS system. A quick phone call to the crew desk rectified things however it would been a bit expensive to get home. I would try to jumpseat without using my current passport first to see if it works. My problems may stem from my particular company. I do know you can pay extra and expedite your passport but don't know how long it takes.

CASS is not required for the cabin... although many gate agents think a passport is required regardless... your results may vary....

can you elaborate on this?

So far this yr I have only been asked once for my passport when j/s ing.
As far as your congressman goes, go see his/her secretary and tell them you need expiteded passport service, your are in the airline biz and that you need help. They usually have a contact at the nearest passport agency and will address a nice little letter to the correct individual. They will have you take it to the post office and pay expidited shipping in both direction and the express fee for the passport. If I remember correctly it was under $200 for all. I renewed mine this past Feb and got it back in 3 days, I even got it back in a Sun.

Photo copy the old one prior to sending it in! As long as I could show a copy of it while the new one was being issued I had no problem!

for what its worth if you can get to a passport office early in the morning before they open(cause everytime i went there was a line before they open) and get ur stuff in real early and let them know you want it that day, you will have to pay about double if i remember right but usually by 3pm or so it will be done.

In August I needed to obtain a second passport. My main passport was in India obtaining a work visa for an up comming contract. I needed to go to Germany last minute for personal reasons. I had to show up at a regional passport office (Chicago) and have proof of travel within 48 hrs. I had to wait in the walkin line which took forever! After spending all day in line, I learned quite a bit about passport renewals. The only way you can get one the same day is to have a reason to need it within 48 hrs. If you showed up with your schedule (proof of travel) and a letter from your CP stating you are required to have your passport for work, and the required renewal forms filled out you will be fine. Remember to pack a lunch!

If you wish to do same day passport service at a passport office, the following allowed me to be in and out in a timely manner.

1.http://travel.state.gov/
2. Complete the DS-82.
3. Get the required letter from chief pilots office.
4. Get the required photographs.
5. Fourteen Days in advance you are able to use a phone tree to schedule and confirm you appointment. (Very Important Write down and DO NOT Loose your appointment ID number).
6. Old Passport
7. Payment Method ($125.00).

I Showed up a few minutes early 9:00 AM, Presented The ID number Ds-82, Letter and Photos to a widow in the lobby. After she verified that I had the required items, she sent me to an upper floor and another number that they would call when they were ready to process my application. As soon as I got off the elevator they were calling my number.

I went to the window she collected my items and my money, gave me another slip of paper with another ID number on it and said my new passport would be ready at noon. The above took a total of 12 minutes.

Returned at 11:50 collected my new passport and back out the door at 12:05. Note you now have a new passport number getting your company a copy of it in a timely manner is important.

If you have your stuff in order and make an appointment very painless. If you do not make an appointment, or forget something the day will be a wash.

If you don't wanna stand in line all day and can wait about 72 hrs for your passport to be returned, your congressman is the way to go.

I only needed a letter from my CP.

I did not have 72 hrs... But now I know that my congress man is an option in the future!

I appreciate all the info fellas. I've talked to a few different gate agents in JFK and ATL. I've gotte the same info that I CAN (and they know it) ride in the cabin without my passport. I'll still try to do it same day anyway. My luck, my first try without it I'd get some un-educated doofus tramp gate agent with an attitude that wouldn't know their own job and won't listen to me.
