How did it work last time?

that depends on who you ask. USAirways guys versus SJS young guys would get you very different answers

Oh wait - you mean the concept? Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong - but it basically means (as I understand it) that a newly formed WO subsidiary (like MidAtlantic) gets new 70-seat jets, but if it ever causes a mainline pilot to be furloughed/displaced, he can "flow-back" to the 70-seater at current pay/seniority. (There were fences about how many people and what percentage blah blah blah) The outcome, though, was that MidAtlantic was sold to RAH for cash and the USAirways people were SOL. That explanation was from 3 RAH guys, so I think that it's right.

Maybe Pinnacle/Colgan will fly the Qs for someone else? It has the flight experience and it can probably ramp up with its training platform. The Qs sure beat the 50 seat RJs from an economic perspective any day on shorter distance flights.

You've redeemed my perception of this thread.

You are partially right. It was an asset sale only!! money for airplanes, training devices and gates. Remember MidAtlanic was just a name. The airplanes were actually flown on the USAir certificate. MDA never had a certificate and it was all a mess for the Pilots. Half of the pilots at MDA were offered jobs at Republic. Half were Captains and half were FO's. The Majority of the J4J guys have gone back to UsAir and Most of the CDL (Allegheny) pilots went to USair. I think we still have 10-15% of the J4J guys who decided to stay at RAH. Smart choice in my opinion.

Maybe I've been under a rock and missed the announcement but it also looks like Republic is shutting down the CRJ operation for Continental.
The reason RAH leased CRJ's was because that was the only 50 seat RJ available at the time. RAH tried to get 145's but there were none available. We got a 1 for 3 deal on the CRJ leases or something really really cheap. They were very short term leases. As the 175's for Republic started coming online the 145's for Chautauqua on the UsAir side would be mover over to the Continental operation. It was a plane swap. The CRJ's were a temporary lift to get our foot in the door at Continental until more 145's became available.

It doesn't seem by looking at the numbers that those CRJ are being replaced by anything. The additional 50 seaters in the report are going to Xjet.

Bedford has wanted out of the CRJ's since the day he bought those queens of the desert that we fly around. He will let them go with no regret and no replacement.

As for how J4J went down, I would say it was a real positive experience overall- and I was an FO who had an increased upgrade time because half of the captain seats went to the mainline furloughees. The mainline pilots (after a two month grouchy hate the world introductory period) really helped change our company and pilot group for the better. They helped enhance our training program, and they offered a wealth of knowledge to those who flew with them. Personally, flying half my trips with mainline captains helped break me of the regional airline mentality of do-it-as-we-tell-you. They taught me to expect more from my dispatchers, more from my mechanics, and more from my union. I learned alot about flying from their stories, and made a lot of connections that may pay off one day if sanity ever returns to aviation. I think J4J pilots overall helped cure the cowboy pilot syndrome that seemed to have been requisite for "good" captains, and as an FO it exposed me to a lot of great decision making captains.

I would welcome mainline pilots onto property again, with rights to some captain seats under an EXPANSION protocol. It benefited nearly everyone, and we are all the better for it.

can the j4j guys that left RAH come back, or was it a one shot deal? if airways starts furloughing, some of those guys might be on the street.

That was the plan in the beginning or at least to my understanding. I have now heard that once all of the CRJ's are gone we will have 10 less aircraft flying for Continental. I believe the number is around 34 airplanes total of which being 145's. So an addition 10 145's will head to Continental leaving us 10 planes less. But as we have seen things can change!!
