We, AWAC, have just been told that as of today, all exterior service panels and doors must be opened and inspected during the preflight on all RON aircraft per TSA requirements. (all doors including the lav service door)
I am just curious if any other carrier out there has to do this or are we just something "special".

At XJT we've had that procedure for about 6 months....First flight we have to check panels as well as aircraft going to/from Mexico. Still haven't found anything in there!! ;-)

PSA is wanting us to do it too. Part of the new US Airways security procedures. They even gave us those cheapo plastic gloves, yeah, that'll stop poo from getting in my face. If a guy is smart enough to put a bomb in the lav service door, he's smart enough to put in in the lav. Next they'll want us to stick our head in there too.

Been doing it at Comair since I have worked here. 2 Years.

You guys have to open the TRU doors and crawl inside the avionics bay end to end?

Pinnacle has been dooing that 2 to 3 years. yeap open up avionics bay and look up inside. open any panel that has a latch basically including the dc plug under the right engine.

you guys are just getting this now?? I remember them (TSA) telling us (allegheny) about 3 months after 9-11 that we had to do this. Nobody cared. I was on the ALPA security comette at the time. Between the company and ALPA we just told the TSA "OK no problem" - and left it at that.

Haven't heard word one of anything like that at PDT. We have to open the four nose doors anyway and check CBs, oxygen, battery connectors, etc, but never heard of doing it for security reasons.

No way in he!! I'm opening up the lav door.

ASA we're not required to open anything... for now.

at skywest not only do we do it but we recently had action taken against a crew and the company for someone not doing it.

And if someone was clever enough to get onto the ramp and place something in the airplane, wouldn't they be able to put it somewhere non-obvious or disguise it such that we wouldn't notice? Honestly, how many of us here would recognize an extra black box in the aft service bay or avionics compartment? I can think of any number of places where you could easily hide something that would not be readily visible...

How about improved overnight ramp security?
Or what about void-if-removed stickers?

Oh never mind...they didn't ask me.

have you ever looked in the avionics bay of the CRJ. Would you really be able to tell if something was a bomb or something supposed to be there? I think this is stupid. We have been doing this at Comair for the entire time i have been here, nearly three years. Really sucks when you come out and the ground crew says, "Hey we went ahead and deiced so y'all can get right out"

Dave

We've been required to do this at Pinnacle ever since I've worked here (nearly 5 years). Did I actually do it all the time when I was an FO? No comment.

You shuold be opening up the left side before every flight to check the emer hyd brake accum pre-charge pressure. @750 psi!

Although I agree that that's a good idea, it was removed from the checklist almost two years ago.
