Here's a little guideline - you should never really hear any new major concepts in flight that you did not first discuss on the ground.

If you are getting briefed on new maneuvers or ideas airborne, then your instructor is not preparing you properly for each lesson.

Good advice, I will make sure this happens in the future.

...and became extremely frustrated if I didn't learn it right the first time because it would then take many more reps before I finally caught on. Perhaps if I had been less intense about learning to fly I would have learned faster and better.

Excellent point. I have certainly been guilty (if that is the correct term) of this in the past. And not just in flying--when I relax a bit, I have no trouble at all meeting eligible bachelorettes. But when I set out to find "the one," I end up doing more harm than good. Perhaps you are putting too much pressure on yourself.

One thing to remember, You have 4 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this stuff isn't learned overnight

Update: Basically I am just posting an email that I sent to a person I know from another message board who happens to be a private pilot, and got me interested in finally taking the plunge and getting my private by posting awesome pictures from his flights.

Hey,

Just thought I would give you an update, since you helped me out so much. I took a week off after my last lesson, and just had a lesson today. Going into things I was alittle nervous about not improving, but I told my inner self to STFU. I asked my instructor a couple of questions, then we headed out. I had a good takeoff, and was feeling good. I let him know beforehand that I really needed a lot of slow flight, and that was it, I did not want to move further on, till I got it. We'll for some reason everything clicked today. I did really well in slow speed, consistent speed, turning at slow speed, coming out of slow speed to cruising, all that stuff. I was ON! Everything was going well, and we got into the pattern. We turned into final, and I starting wigging out in my mind. Again I told my inner bitch to STFU and land the **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** plane. Right at the end he gave me a little rudder nudge to the left, but other than that, I landed the plane(I think...lol). I feel so good right now. I know I will probably hit a wall again in the future, but I am enjoying things for now. I actually feel like I am going to be able to do this. I also learned that I CAN overcome obstacles like my slow flight problem. It's funny, when I turned to final, your advice popped into my head. The part where you said "be a little cocky, consider your instructor insurance. That is what I did, and basicallly said to myself I am going to land this or lawn dart the plane trying, and if the instructor lets it happen...his bad lol.

Thanks a ton again, and if ever get comfortable enough to snap pictures while I am up, I will send them to you.

One other thing is try to stay with just one instructor. If things fall apart and you two can't connect, then just reschedule. Different CFI's have different ways of teachings, and different demeanors about them. You would do much better if you just stick with one. Also, down the line swapping around with instructors can lead to repeating lesson items just to satisfy the "new" instructor you are proficient on a prerequesite step. (All part 61 talk of course)

Good advice, and that is what I have planned to do. If I cannot get with that instructor I will just skip the lesson.
