ABX AIR HIRES NEW SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF FLIGHT OPERATIONS
Gerdes Brings Over 20 Years of Commercial Airline Experience to ABX Air
ABX Air, Inc. announced today that Captain Mike Gerdes will replace Captain Robert Morgenfeld as its new Senior Vice President of Flight Operations. Morgenfeld is retiring in July.
Gerdes, 50, has over 20 years of commercial airline experience. He will report to ABX Air President John Graber, and have direct responsibility for all Flight Operations of the all cargo airline company.

"Mike is an exceptional leader. We welcome his skill, experience, and positive leadership style," Graber said. "He is just the person to take the controls as Captain Morgenfeld retires. We wish Bob all our best in his retirement."
Gerdes comes to ABX Air from ATA Airlines, where he was the Vice president of Flight Operations. His background includes being Chief Pilot, Fleet Manager, Line Check Airman and Simulator Check Airman. In addition to ATA, Gerdes flew for Comair, Eastern Airlines, and Pan American World Airways. Gerdes recently served as Chairman of the operations council for the National Air Carrier Association (NACA). His experience includes over 8,000 hours of flight time. He earned his B.S. in Applied Science and Technology from Thomas A. Edison State College and is pursuing his MBA at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Captain Bob Morgenfeld, Senior Vice President of Flight Operations, announced his plans earlier this year to retire this July after 23 years at ABX Air.

Does anyone have some insight on this guy, the good the bad, the ugly?

Well yes, but as before if myself or anyone else replies and it's not what you want to hear then you start attacking the messenger.

Go do your own homework on this one.

Well if it sounds like a rumor then it is. Don't post any of the: I know a guy who fly with a guy who had a daughter that slept with this guy who's brother said....
I don't think anyone will attack anyone with facts to back up what they say. If it's hearsay then thats not admissible and expect to be questioned. If you call that an attack then call it what you will.

Let me rephrase.... Does anyone except R&W have insight on this guy? The good the bad and the ugly.
R&W you can go back to counting your money or stealing little kids lolipops, or whatever it is you do..
Do you ever say anything positive. And before you blast back with a smarta$$ remark to me about" I could ask you the same question". Answer mine first.
The only time I throw mud is when another throws it first. You get onto every thread and slam whatever it is being said whether it is positive or not. I think from now on I will just ignore your posts because they are not worth responding to.......

There are some Astar crew members that worked at ATA. Maybe they will give some insight. I have spoke to a couple of them about this and it was interesting.

I worked at ATA for ten years prior to shutdown. I know Mike (not his real first name which starts with a T) from professional dealings there including union issues. Despite the titles in his resume, I never saw Mike display one ounce of leadership during those ten years. He is merely a "yes man mouthpiece" for those above him.

Watch your contract closely as he will ignore it at will just like he did at ATA with our contract that prohibited KWI (combat zone) layovers.

All I can think of is that he must have some compromising pictures of John Graber from his days at ATA. Why else would John hire a loser such as T. Michael Gerdes. During his tenure as VP of Flight Ops our system reliability declined markedly. His lack of action and poor decision making directly led to our demise.

Good luck to all those at ABX

Good, then he'll fit right in. No training necessary.

Was he in charge of hiring at ATA? I either saw him at a job fair or maybe the application had his name on it somewhere?

Not sure but the name sounds very familiar... I remember sending in my resume with the $50 check and 5 days later they announced they're stopping hiring. They did send me my check back though... ;)

While you have no real way of knowing this would appear to be no different from what we currently have in management.

Again, no real difference. Our managemnt has on previous occasions indicated they would follow their interpretation of our CBA and if we didn't like it we could grieve it.

If in fact he displayes no real leadership or job skills then the problem lies with those who hired him and pull his strings. This suggests that Graber is one of many smaller company "peter principle" type A personality executives who call themselves managers running around in this country.

Good luck to all those at ABX.
Thanks, I suspect we all need some at this point.

This guy is hired to run a multi-million dollar airline.

He doesn't even have an MBA.

Let alone any experience running an airline.

Maybe one of the inside guys would have been better?
