Hi everyone, I’ve been a long time reader but this is my first post. I am so excited I just got the word that I am a new Skywest first officer. YES! Finally landed my dream job. But anyways I have a lot of question. Hopefully you can help me out. I know they put us up in a hotel and I’m wondering if it’s double occupancy and if so can I pick who I room with? I became friends with one of the guys I interviewed with and would like to share with him? Also is there an Internet connection for a computer? What type of carry-on should I get? Is the standard leather flight bag ok for the jet? Should I drive out and have a car during training or fly out? When do flight benefits for me or the family start? How long is ground school? They said I got the jet, and I herd they train you on the 200 and then difference training from there. Is that true? Anything I should study ahead of time? I’m sure I’ll be back with more question but any help would be great.

Ok, lets see...

I know they put us up in a hotel and I’m wondering if it’s double occupancy and if so can I pick who I room with?
Call the number of the contact person when you get your "Welcome Aboard" packet. Tell them your situation, I've heard of them letting you shack up with buddies in the past.

I became friends with one of the guys I interviewed with and would like to share with him?
To this I have no answer...

Also is there an Internet connection for a computer?
Yes, free high-speed in the rooms, no wireless though.

What type of carry-on should I get?
Depends on how much you want to spend, just don't get a HUGE one that won't fit in the overhead. Wait until groundschool and talk to others.

Is the standard leather flight bag ok for the jet?
Yes.

Should I drive out and have a car during training or fly out?
Drive if at all possible. Being stuck in the Candlewood without wheels feels like doing time in a minimum security prison. Just having the opportunity to go to the store, get up to Park City, escape the training routine helps with sanity.

When do flight benefits for me or the family start?
Hmm.. Don't remember. Others can answer this or you will find out shortly once in groundschool.

How long is ground school?
Indoc: 1.5 weeks, Systems: 2.5 weeks, 70 differences (tacked onto theend of 50 systems): 2 days, FTD: 5 sessions, SIM: 8 sessions (including checkride).

They said I got the jet, and I herd they train you on the 200 and then difference training from there. Is that true?
See above.

Anything I should study ahead of time?
You'll get a limitations and memory items package in the mail shortly. Commit it to memory (only the 50 seater stuff, the 70 stuff can wait until the end of training).

Good luck.

Flyingfool,

Congrats!

Best of luck at your new job!

I was going to rip you apart with sarcasm but ROCK IT DUDE! Nice job! I got an interview at a place and was doing the happy dance for two hours.

Congrads and good Luck at SkyWest!!

I was pumped when I got my first 121 class call!

Want a good carry-on crew bag?? Get a TravelPro. Walkabout or the Crew 5!
I have the Walkabout, it's great and a little cheaper than the Crew 5. 22 Inch is the normal size.

Welcome to Skywest! If you get COS I'll see you there when I get back from the Persian Gulf.

Ask the guys and gals at the Candlewood front desk about the story of the "Candlewood Crapper."

Congrats dude.

As far as the internet access goes, be a cheap bastard like me. Buy a wireless router at Wal-Mart for $60. They have a 90 day return policy and training lasts only about 60. Besides your neighbors will thank you for the hot spot.

Good luck.

As for luggage, I'd suggest the Luggage Works Stealth NG. It fits in the overhead, which is much better than jamming it under the last row of seats and then having coffee spilled on it, or worse, a loose bladder issue. It's expensive but worth it.

A cheap alternative, if you can shop at Costco: Buy the Kirkland rollerbag. Nice, sturdy enough to get the job done, and has a lifetime guarantee. They'll replace a damaged unit no questions asked. I think I paid only about $80.00 for mine.

Most sporting goods stores sell a nice backpack. Get a -200 patch and sew it on the side that everyone will see as you walk through the terminal so that they will know that you are a Jet F/O and not some lousy prop driver. Make sure that you carry the pack on your right shoulder so that everyone will know your rank as an F/O. Only Captains can wear the backpack on the left shoulder (you'll find this out in basic indoc, too)

Congrats on the dream job and good luck.

Sincerely,

B. Franklin
