BRISTOL, Rhode Island (AP) -- A student group at Roger Williams University is offering a new scholarship for which only white students are eligible, a move they say is designed to protest affirmative action.

The application for the $250 award requires an essay on "why you are proud of your white heritage" and a recent picture to "confirm whiteness."

"Evidence of bleaching will disqualify applicants," says the application, issued by the university's College Republicans.

Jason Mattera, 20, who is president of the College Republicans, said the group is parodying minority scholarships.

"We think that if you want to treat someone according to character and how well they achieve academically, then skin color shouldn't really be an option," he said. "Many people think that coming from a white background you're automatically privileged, you're automatically rich and your parents pay full tuition. That's just not the case."

The stunt has angered some at the university, but the administration is staying out of the fray. The school's provost said it is a student group's initiative and is not endorsed by Roger Williams.

Mattera, who is of Puerto Rican descent, is himself a recipient of a $5,000 scholarship open only to a minority group.

"No matter what my ethnicity is, I'm making a statement that scholarships should be given out based on merit and need," Mattera told the Providence Journal.

His group took out a full-page ad in last week's issue of the university's student newspaper to tout the scholarship, which was for $50 until two donors came forward to add $100 each during the weekend, Mattera said.

It's not the first brush with controversy for the group. The school temporarily froze the Republicans' money in the fall during a fight over a series of articles published in its monthly newsletter. One article alleged that a gay-rights group indoctrinates students into homosexual sex.

Its great because it's so politically incorrect. I love it! But seriously, they shouldn't create another racist scholarship to protest already existing ones. They should just fight to have the ones already in place removed.

But that is exactly what they are doing by limiting scholorship offers to white students only. Talk about hypocrtical. This whole thing is a joke.

At least Women in Aviation is open to men, and the Organization of Black Airline Pilots is open to whites. This is nothing but a publicty stunt and a joke. Typical of stuff you find on internet message boards.

OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) -- Officials disciplined students who papered their nearly all-white high school with posters advocating a white student from South Africa for the school's "Distinguished African American Student Award."

Peggy Rupprecht, spokeswoman for the Westside Community Schools district, said administrators at Westside High School discovered more than a hundred of the posters throughout the school first thing Monday -- Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

"The content of the posters, they believed, was inappropriate and insensitive to some members of our school community," Rupprecht said.

Citing privacy policies, Rupprecht said she could not specify what the penalties were or how many students were disciplined. But the mother of the boy pictured on the posters said he was suspended for two days.

The award has been given the last eight years to an outstanding black student as part of the school's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, she said.

The poster pictured junior Trevor Richards, 16, smiling and making a thumbs up sign. A message at the top encouraged votes for him for next year's award.

Karen Richards said her son and his friends were not trying to hurt anyone.

"My son is not a racist," she told the Omaha World-Herald. "He has black friends, friends from Bangladesh and Egypt. Color has never been an issue in our home."

"It was a very innocent thing," she said.

Two of her son's friends were disciplined along with him, she said. A fourth student was punished for circulating a petition Tuesday criticizing the practice of recognizing only black student achievement with the award, she said.

Tylena Martin, a junior, said the poster had been on the door to her homeroom class where she is the only black student. She said she felt hurt by the posters and the backlash that ensued.

According to 2002-2003 state statistics, 56 Of Westside's 1,632 students are black

If the wanted the award to go to a black person, they should have called it such.

This guy was more African-American than anyone else in the school.

Guys, it's a $250 dollar scholarship. It's symbolic and created only to get people discussing the hypocrisy of creating a scholarship that is only attainable by certain races, when that in itself is racist.

Looks like it worked.

"They should just fight to have the ones already in place removed." That war is being fought every day, just like the student who took it all the way to court, trying to get into a school, because acdemically he was better suited. Not sure if he won.

We have Miss Black USA, NAACP etc. etc. Youraise a stink about that, you are labelled a racist. However, imagine the furor, if we had a Miss White USA.

Sometimes, the best way to counter this, is by doing what these students are doing, showing the hypocrisy of the system. If I knew where to send the money, I surely would!

I am amazed at how racially discriminating these affirmative action programs are. Due to the PC environment we have all allowed and created, most people are afraid to stand up when reverse discrimination runs rampant.

What many of these groups don't seem to realize is that while most people smile and agree with affimative action on the outside, the resentment over its obvious inequity is building silently. It will eventually boil to the point where it will have to be addressed. These types of student spoofs are proof of this, and I'm sure only the beginning.

We all agree that racism is unacceptable, but it certainly will never go away until all groups let go of it.

Dude should resign or forfeit his scholarship $$

Sorry, even if this is a legit argument, these guys have no credibility IMHO

"Mattera, who is of Puerto Rican descent, is himself a recipient of a $5,000 scholarship open only to a minority group."

(n.b. Mattera is the president of the College Republicans, the group sponsoring the "whites only" scholarship)

I think some of you are missing the point of the situation... that opportunity based on race is racism, no matter who benefits. The fact that the president apparently is the recipient of a racially based scholarship adds that much more credibility to his argument.

For the most dense out there, these people are not starting the "white dude" scholarship to directly help a particular individual get an education, they are merely pointing out how rediculous a racially based opportunity sounds once "white" replaces African American, Hispanic, woman, Native American or any other special interest group in the title.

For the even more dense it was already mentioned: "Miss Black America" = not a raised eyebrow in sight, full publicity, winner recognized for contribution to ethnic roots (ten minute spot on Oprah Winfrey show, while guests nod their collective encouragement, kleenex on hand for the inevitable tears) etc.

"Miss White America" = utter shock and horror....

Look on the cover of any women's magazine on any newsstand. You already have one.

...And then there's Oprah and Star Jones, but no one really wants to see them on a magazine cover.

Thank you so much for that. Lets not forget BET and EBONY magazine. What would happen if there was a WET or IVORY magazine? I'll tell you what, uproar. And contrary to popular belief, affirmative action isn't reverse racism, it is the epitome of blatant 100% RACISM. When someone tells me that they are pro affirmative action, they tell me a books worth of information about themselves.

Along that lines that Dizel8 said, what if a White Entertainment Television channel were created as opposed to BET. I bet the NAACP would have a something to say about that. It’s kind of funny that I have mentioned this to a few people and have been braded a racist for it.
