Hi guys Im new here Im 22 and live in WNY. I palan on attending this school right http://www.prioraviation.com/new.html and take their part 141 classes, to get my private pilot licence, my long term goal is to get commerical pilot licence and work in the airline industry. Meanwile Ill be going to local community college for my 2 year engeneering science degeree since no one wants to hire people without a degree and it helps you to get a better job.
To be quite honest Im walking into this blind, and words of advice wisdom or random insults will be apreciated. Oh yeah I did some thath looks like its gonna cost me around 8 grand to get private pilot licence.

Enter the profession eyes open. Lurk the Regionals board, since that is your likely route. The regionals used to be a stepping stone to a "Major". Since Majors as we used to know them don't exist anymore, most regional pilots aren't moving much. The pay and QOL for a junior pilot can be tough. If you still want to pursue it, I wish you the very best of luck. It sounds like you have a good plan, but the price for your PPL seems a bit high.

Can you imagine a resume like this? Ughh...

$8,000 for a private pilot license??? You already start by being robbed here... watch out! I wonder how much they will ask you for every other license and ratings...

$6,000 should be the maximum for a PPL I think, if you pay more...they are overpriced.

Of the 96 airlines presently hiring, only 5 make the college degree a showstopper. If you to be an airline pilot you fly airplanes. Do a search under college degree and you will get alot of different views on this subject. You will notice a lot pilots working for Jet Blue, SWA, and other do not have college degrees. There will most likely be responses to this post.

All I can say is get that engineering degree! You NEED something to fall back on....and something not related to aviation. If your planning on the regionals, also plan on breaking into your savings account.....that and lots of delicious ramen noodles (there are some new flavors now I think!).

Engineering ain't the ticket. Unless you're really specialized.

Petrov--lurk on all these forums and figure out which direction you would like to go (you still may change later). Get thick skin to ward off all the negativity. If you REALLY want to be a pilot and nothing else will do, then go for it. If you're just doing it for money or a cool lifestyle, go to law school. Good luck.TC

Your assignment for the next year is...

to not post on this Board. Rather, as someone suggested to "lurk" here and read all you can about pros and cons of the many issues that you'll have to make decisions about.

This is a great forum program in that it retains virtually every post ever posted and there is a wealth of insight from all different viewpoints. Use the search button often in order to look for specific types of subjects that are the issues that you're going to deal with.

Also, it's never too early to start cultivating friends who are pilots (they'd appreciate it too because nobody wants a pilot for a friend for many reasons!). Get somebody in your area who can be a sort of mentor and can answer your questions first-hand. If I were you, I'd go out to one of the little airports in your area and ask around as to which airplane owners are commercial pilots. Make the contacts and ask the questions. As you can see from this Board, all pilots like to talk- especially about themselves!

Good luck. After your field work is done, you'll be ready to converse here.

ps- that's too much money for a private license

If they quoted $8000 then it will come out to be more like $10-12,000.
It is much more common to see these prices then it was 10-15 years ago.
Try to track down some students that got ratings there and ask how much they paid and ask what they liked and disliked about the place.

Im sorry for the spelling my current computer does not have Microsoft word installed, belive it or no I do use spell check. English is my second language.
I dont know what "regionals" is so Im going to use the Search button :)
But yes I have read up somewhat and looks like its going to be a long and hard path ahead, that is why Im going for the degree.
As for the cost those are my estimates if I flew for 65 hours on their best plane with the head instructor. Plus I can do alot of those hours on their "simulator" for fraction of the cost and it still counts toward my flying.
I appreciateall the responces and one again Im sorry for my poor wording and spelling.

Ah, 2nd language, forgiven. Where ya from, by the way?

:D For some Americans, proper english is their second language... TC

Flying seems less glamourous the longer you're in it. If you go through all your ratings quickly and consecutively, you'll be burnt out no doubt. Probably wonder many times during your training why youre bothering to do this. Things will get frsutrating and you'll want to quit. The only way to fail is to quit. If you kep trying, you'll succeed.

Prices forthe private vary from $5000 - $10000. Dont let anyone tell you youre being ripped off. It depends on may factors like how busy the airspace is and how frequently you fly.

You might want to go to ALLATPS. They have a good program thats reasonably rpiced and will get everything (all ratings) done quickly and all multi time.

Regionals used to be called commuters.

They fly the smaller RJ's or Regional Jets which feed the hubs of maineline carriers. Traditionally, regionals flew turboprop planes.
