I spoke to a Continental engineering dept. guy(Later a pilot there) who said CO had been looking into it, combined with removing the engineer panel .
That Boeing had pushed the FAA to promulgate a rule that changing the number of engines cannot be accomplished on an STC, but only by recertifying the entire airplane, as if a new design, to current FAR Transport Category rules.
Effectively stopped CO, but unfortunately also stopped the Conroy PT6 trimotor conversion STC for the DC-3.
