My husband once flew with a Captain whose parents went along on their ferry flight. He told me it was great fun for them to watch their son and they learned a lot about his job. Wouldn't that make a great gift?
AirBear, I'm not surprised to hear that NJ pilots are respected for standing up for the profession. I think that's behind the offers of a ride.
To beat my "fan club" to the pitch...yes, I'm fully aware that it might just be professional courtesy... but the mention of the Capt being an ALPA volunteer suggests there's a bit more to the story. I'm focusing on the positive.
