Isn't the PBI area just as expensive as Socal?

I think you can drive a 2 or 3 hours away from PBI and find something resonable in Orlando, FLL, Daytona, or out in the swamp west of town. LAX on the other hand, if you drove 2 or 3 hours you would still be sitting in traffic near LAX. Just looking at SoCal from the air compared to South Florida is no comparison, Urban Sprawl seems much more serious in California in my opinion.

PBI is expensive. I'm recently hired; got PBI and commute. I'll tell you two things...Netjets doesn't help you out with commuting at all and they want you at your domicile. They spent an extra 600 bucks buying me a commercial ticket to FLL with a rental car to PBI rather than let me commercial to my home which was much closer. Now that I'm based in PBI, often I get commercialled elsewhere to start my trips.

If you want to live in PBI and can afford it; you're in there. If not, life will not be easy.

Yeah, but I'd rather live in the hurricane's path than in Compton, CA. LA is definitely not a cheap place to live. What are the call-out times for NJA pilots on a reserve schedule? How far away from LA could you realistically live and still be responsive when called given the terrible traffic situation? You would end up renting an apartment in El Segundo or Hawthorne for the rest of your life...
