Hey Guys and Gals, look really heavy at the fractionals to make my career choice but i just and some general operational questions. I know you guys get a flight release from your dispatcher, but how do you handle your weight and balance, runway analysis , etc?

1) do you guys use standard bag and passenger weights like the airlines ?
2)do you have performance books like regionals or do you get performance info in your release ?
3)Do you guys do anything with acars/ or an automated communications systems related to flight planning ??

I guess I am just thinking , I know you must be very busy before a flight and i was wandering what was in place, if anything to help out!! I know at the commuters we are doing scheduled 20-25 minute turns.
Thanks

1) do you guys use standard bag and passenger weights like the airlines ?

Yes. If there's an obvious discrepancy (like additional bags), we can either calculate it ourselves and go, or send the new data to the company and get an amended W&B sent back out.

2)do you have performance books like regionals or do you get performance info in your release ?

The release packet includes some performance data, yes, but for some things we'll crack the aircraft manual out. If there's a climb gradient issue, for example, we'll run those numbers ourselves.

Keep in mind that with thousands of potential destinations, it's not really practical to chart out every runway at every airport we might serve, the way the airlines do. But for your basic takeoff and landing at an unobstructed airport, we're provided just about everything we need. All I really need to do is grab the checklist, plug in the weight and temperature, and get the V-speeds and runway requirements.

3)Do you guys do anything with acars/ or an automated communications systems related to flight planning ??

The release, weather, etc., is all transmitted to the company-supplied Blackberry handheld. (You can use that to fax yourself a paper copy if you like.) The AFIS communications on the FMS can be used to load up the filed flight plan, get D-ATIS, weather, PDC, etc.

Hope that helps.

Yes to all except #3. Our turns are scheduled no quicker than an hour. So, hurry is not in our vocabulary.

We operate at 2 speeds. slow, and stop.

The FOM does set up standard loading charts, which we use 97% of the time. Other than that a call to dispatch, and you can either pencil it in or the dispatcher can have you a new release to your blackberry in less than 2 minutes. I usually pencil it in. Seems faster.

Are you at a regional? I'm guessing ASA?
