about ten years ago i was going down the colorado river in a raft (grand canyon).

there was a phone cable strung across the canyon, and our guide said that there was a club of fighter pilots who had flown under the cable.

Were they stationed in Italy?

Club of bonecraniums, maybe... Seriously, I spent my time at Nellis and never heard of it.

I'm not a member..don't wanna be. There are plenty of ways to shine your ass as a fighter pilot that doesn't endanger people on the ground or your jet.

The story I've heard was that the steel cable from guamo point got torn by a F-4 in '60s. They lost a wingtip but were able to get back to Nellis.

Cable is about 1-1/2" thick and some of it is still wrapped around the wheel at the guamo point.

There's another Phantom wreck - scattered on "Little Texas", a plateau a few miles east of there.

Hey, I heard the same story, but in my version it was an F-100 and it crashed on the North side of the rim over by Snap point.

Concur with Eagleflip,

It seems most of these stories end with some kind of wreckage. We (Navy) lost a T-34 (and two pilots, my old instructor) doing the same thing a year or so ago at NAS El Centro. I would rather not die in a spectacular, fiery, explosion in the middle of the desert with no one to watch. Just an opinion...

Recommendation: Don't fly under any wires.

We do low levels because they are "fun", they provide no tactical significance what so ever. Just remember the A-6's and Tornado's in the Gulf War I going low and getting their A$$'s handed to them. that being said, I can't wait for my next low level hop.:D
