I have around 1500 total and only 80 hours multi. I haven't instructed in over a year, however, I am still technically instrument current (not nearly close to interview proficiency though). I'd like to get back into aviation and am considering getting my cfii and mei to get back in the air. However, I've visited all of the local flight schools and they are very leery of my flight time. They basically think that I'd only stick around for a few months until I got on with the first 135 or 121 that would give me a shot, which is pretty much true. So, at this point, I'm wondering if I should just suck it up and buy some more multi time and shoot approaches until I'm blue in the face or should I continue to pursue the other instructor ratings? From what I've seen, 135/121 companies like to see current aviation employment, so this is where my logic is going by getting back into the cfi market.
I know the job market still sucks, but it is better than it was last year and I'd like to do my best to get myself a 135 or 121 pilot slot asap. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Go get at least 20 more Multi. Also many places are going to want you to have 100 hrs in the past 60 days so you might as well make it multi.

At Airnet with those hours and around 200 multi you will be very competitive as well as most 135 operations. You can apply with them right on their web site.

It would not hurt to brush up on your CFI though as well...

Have you looked into ATP, Inc? If you get your instructor ratings with them, you might be able to instruct there, and it's almost all multi engine flying. You have good experience, but multi is king and they wouldn't worry about you leaving right away. In fact, they want you to leave as soon as you can. It's owned and operated by airline pilots and they know the score.

Good luck in whatever you choose. I would suggest you get the other instructor ratings anyway, as they are a good refresher. Then just look for a job if the ATP way doesn't work for you. Hope this helps.
