I want to get my Uncle (who taught me how to fly) a really cool aviation gift for xmas. One thought I had was to obtain a sectional from the year he soloed at Van Nuys, which would be October 1972 (LA sectional). Any ideas on where I could find such a thing? Haven't had much luck w/ ebay. Thanks for any help!

Make a lot of phone calls to the smaller mom and pop operated flight schools throughout the country.. I have seen quite a few have taken up collection(s) of "older" and outdated material but I think you have a pretty big battle considering that you are looking for a sectional from 32 years ago, you may even want to post a wanted ad on the numerous aviation message boards.

Good luck and I hope you are able to locate it. Pretty kool gift idea in my opinion that should bring a smile to his face.

I'm not sure how much help this will be, but you may be able to get some information from this website. It has a database of old sectionals.

You may be able to get some information here, contact information or otherwise.

Good luck. Sounds like a great gift.

Since he soloed to fly from VNY, why not buy a reserve copy of One Six Right (www.onesixright.com), which is a documentary about VNY that will be released in theaters in early 2005, with the DVDs shipping in the summer. I think you get a DVD of the trailer along with a 3-minute preview of the aerial footage from the film when you reserve a DVD of the documentary, so you'd still have something to put under the tree for the time being. And then later it really will be Christmas in July for him...

I'll ask around. How about some dirt from 16R/34L? Or a poster for the movie? Phil's autograph? His 'old' CFI's autograph?

It's kind of tacky but if he had his own plane I saw an ad in Sporty's for custom made aircraft odels that you put on your desk that are made to look exactly like each aircraft. You send them pictures and stuff and they make it, it's like those promotional one the airlines have of their jets that guys put on their shelves. I also saw an all leather cencal flight bag. Both aren't very original, but very exspensive! good luck!

Thanks JN. I was originally going to get him that Van Nuys movie, but didn't realize it was going to be coming out so late. I suppose any kind of old Van Nuys memorabilia would be cool.
