I'm new to the r/c scene and i need some help looking for an engine for my plane. I have an Aerostar 40 and i need a .30-.40 two-cycle engine w/ needle mount ( i think this is what it's called, i'm not sure though, i cant remember what the guy said at the hobby shop...) on the carburator not on the rear of the engine. If anyone knows where i can find an engine like this i would appriciate it.

I'm almost certain you'd want the conventional needle valve arrangement (mounted in front of the cylinder. Remote or rear mount is mostly used in specialized apps (ducted fan, racers, etc).

Until you find some good used outlets or other reputable sources, mail order a new one. You'll get a good price and save the sales tax. generic .40 sizes should be in stock. It's been a few years since I was flying RC, but Tower Hobbies & Omni Models were a couple of good sources. Top of the line used to be OS. Supertigre makes some good products. Magnum was making a pretty nice OS copy about the time I quit for less $$.

If you want it to last years, get one with ball bearings (more $$). Otherwise a sleeve bearing type will work fine if you take care of it. Last, if it calls for a 30 to 40... you might think about putting a 45 on it! If I remember right, a lot of 45's would fit in the same mount as a 40.

There are many different engines to pick from.

The easiest thing for me to do with your question would be to go to your local hobby shop and ask questions.

But if I had to suggest some, I would say an OS40, Fox40, K&B45.

But like I said, there are many, and it also depends on what you want to spend.

There are ball bearing engines, there are bushed engines, all depends on what you want.

If you have a 40 sized trainer, than you need a .40 size engine.

Go to the hobby shop, or get online and take a look.

Its a great hobby, with alot of cool people.

Heres another thought also, go out to the local flying field and just watch and ask a bunch of questions, most guys out there will gladly help you.

Give me a PM if I can help you out with any specifics.

A few years back I put a .91 engine on a .40 size Extra300!
Wow, did it scream! Talk about Vertical performance! Whew that was fun!:D
Man, I want to get back into R/C flying sometime. :D

Let me clarify my point about recommending a .45 size engine.

I didn't recommend it just for surplus power, even though that does come in handy sometimes!

My point is that for very little more money and almost no downside, you can buy the .45 size instead of the .40. Install the 45 on your trainer and set the throttle to only open 75% until you get to where you can fly the thing.

Here's a quick comparison I found

OS 40FX
$104
16.8oz
1.36hp
2 ball bearings, no piston ring
1.73" mounting hole centers

OS 46FX
$109
16.4oz (less than the 40!)
1.62hp
2 ball bearings, no ring
1.73" mounting hole centers

So, in this example, $5 will get you 20% more hp, less weight and no mounting problems.

Good luck

WingRider -

had a buddy who put a 90 on a Sportster 40... unbelievable! Probably about the same deal as your Extra.

I had a 40 size Hots with a Suprtiger 61 and a 3 bladed gruapner prop.

I didnt do stall turns with it, I did stall pinwheels with it.

I would stab the rudder and throttle and it would stay in position and do 2 1/2 turns before it would start down.

I also did the same thing with a 20 size pattern plane, I had a K&B 40 on it. My freind who was out flying with me one day who also was a cop put his radar on it in a level pass, it was doing 108.

that OS 46 FX and aerostar 40 are a perfect combination. You can run 20 gallons through a os engine in a summer and never have a deadstick landing. Dont have to set the needle valve very often either. Go with the OS.

Thanks for the help everybody ! I think i might have found what i need.

I'm a little nervous mail ordering this engine. I hope it fits right, it should all the same though.
