So there I was, old getting a bit too moody. So I figured, I should go shopping for a new one. Now, being an airline pilot=poor, was looking for the most bang for my buck. So, what would you get, for say $500.

Here is a link to a similar discussion from not too long ago.

There is a ton of stuff on ebay. I was searching for a few months, but finally got my used Fender through a local private seller.

If you're looking for a guitar/amp combo, a lot of stores sell them together for $250-$300. One of the popular packages is the Fender Squire "Strat Pack." I believe that it includes the guitar, practice amp, strap, chord, picks and maybe a book.

If you are looking for cheap, foreign made "knock-offs", then buy Squire, Epiphone, Mexican Strats, etc. You can find them all day long at any music store in the under $500 range. But....

If you want first quality stuff made in the USA, custom built to your specifications, go to Carvin and read about this company. Read reviews in all the major guitar magazines about their products. You probably won't find one for $200 (then again, you get what you pay for), but you can find good used ones on eBay and other places for around $500...or Custom Shop brand new to your specs for around $1000. Call Fender, Gibson, ESP, Jackson, PRS...etc. and ask them 2 questions. Will they build you a custom shop guitar? And if they answer that first question with a "yes", which I doubt, then ask them how much? Their quotes ususally start around $4000.

I guess it all depends whether or not you want a guitar that will last a lifetime, or one you will be replacing with a better one every few years. If you are looking for "bang for the buck", there is NO company that even comes close.

I'll give you one more link. Here's a thread about "why Carvin"...

Why Carvin?

Well flex75, you should be proud, currently looking at getting a Carvin.

Hey flx757,

I bought one of those Fender Squier bass/amp combo. Since then, I upgraded to am Ampeg BA115 and I'm looking to upgrade my bass. I'd like a p-bass sort of combo simply for the wide range of uses but I know very few musicians and NONE of them play bass.

What would you recommend for something in the medium to upper medium quality and price range?

Good job....

I haven't played bass in a while, but I'm about to get back into it. I'm ordering an LB20 with a Flamed Maple Top. I wanted a basic model with passive electronics, and that one seems to fit the bill. I haven't decided on brown stain, vintage yellow, or sunsetburst on the Flamed Maple....probably the antique brown. That'll go best with my other guitars, which are all natural woods. Clear gloss on all mahogany on the SC90, clear matte satin on the Koa Bolt Plus, and Figured Walnut on the AE185.

Anyway, enjoy....that's my real passion these days. Kinda leaving the flying behind for the music.

I agreee. I think you got a fine guitar. You will be absolutely amazed at the quality of the matierial and construction for the price. Carvin gives you top quality, and since you buy direct from the manufacturer, you get excellent value without paying for distribution and retail markup. It is by by far the best quality and value on the market. I would not consider any other brand. I own 5 Carvin guitars, 1 Carvin bass, 2 Carvin amps and a couple of Carvin effects. Their customer service is excellent.....they go out of their way to keep you satisfied, and they are custom made to YOUR specifications in San Diego, USA at a remarkable price.

I guarantee you will be more than satisfied. You will be simply amazed at the quality you got for the price you paid.

Congratulations!!

I don't work for Carvin, I am just an incredibly satisfied customer for life. who promotes their products because I believe you cannot get a better product or a better value or better customer service from any other manufacturer. If anyone has any questions or would like any additional information, I can put you in touch with certain individuals there that can provide you with whatever information you seek. All you have to do is ask.

I might have to take a look at these Carvins. You're about the 3rd or 4th guy that's spoken highly of them in the last month.

I am more of a Gibson fanatic, but if I buy every one that I want, I'll have to sell the house!

flx757, who'd you fly DHC-7's for? I flew them at pan Am Express.

Well, I do speak highly of Carvins, but it's only because I have had extrordinary good luck with them. Their products are excellent, at a price the other manufacturers cannot touch, and their customer service is second to none. Like I said in an earlier post, I don't even consider other manufactuers any more.

Now, back to aviation...

I flew Dash 7s for 4 different companies. Originally Rio Airways, then Air West in Texas, then went to ERA in Anchorage, then finally Rocky Mountain in DEN. That was the most fun flying I have ever done. Especially the flying for ERA and Rocky.

I'm starting to feel like I haven't lived because I haven't played a Carvin. But then they have those really wide, funny-looking pickups don't they :D Only kidding, my Destroyer II has one of those and it is pretty fun.

Hey..I got one that has 2 of those really wide, funny looking pickups in it...but I put one of those "singlecoils" in the middle, just so they'd let me in the door at certain places. ;)

BTW...you can get certain model Carvins with singlecoils. The AP 11 is a really nice sounding singlecoil...if you go for that sort of thing. :D

better pick up your very own 1 of 100 in a limited run of the Bootsy Collins "Space Bass" guitar.

BRING ON DA FUNK!

I gaurantee you my 6 & 7 year old are the only white kids in town who can sing along with most Parliament tracks.

EUREKA!

That's what's missing from the aviation landscape, a funkadelic LCC! P-Funk Airlines? How about the Mothership Connection?
Flight attendants dressed up like Dr. Funkenstien, Sir Nose, Starchild, Bootzilla.

We could forgo the hat/no hat argument in favor of the wig/no wig arguement.

DA BOMB!
