I like the guy's political views.. but he makes a practice of belittling airline pilots and our profession on a fairly regular basis. He thinks of us as little more than bus drivers due to his "considerable flying experience."



I wouldn't mind having his airplanes, though.

True - in fact one of Neal's tag lines is "I'm turning a rotten personality disorder into a dang fine living"

Neal included a fight between him and then Mayor of Atlanta, Bill Campbell, on one of his tapes. Bill Campbell who is probably more of jerk than can be exaggerated dug up all the dirt from Neal's former law practice and hit him with it on live radio. Boortz lost it - got madder than 737Pylt at an RJDC deposition.

"Boo got shot" is another Boortz classic. Boortz is smart enough to realize if you are going to make fun of black people in Atlanta, you better get a black member of your staff to do it. You have got to hear this & the translation. This is one of the funniest things I've ever heard.

Other tag lines: "America's rude awakening", "High Priest of the Church of the painful truth", and "Insensitivity Hour".

In his book, he can tell how well the ratings are by the number of hate emails he receives. He even reads them on the air. Then there are the INGTLTYA group. These are the ones who say "I'm never going to listen to you again" emails. If everyone of these emails were true, his ratings would actually be negative.... in other words they still listen.

As the title of his book says, "somebody has to say it".....

Regardless of opinions, Boortz is an avid pilot and tries to mention the aviation business, both good and bad, as much as possible to a non pilot audience that doesnt give a damn about the aviation business. Since he was on a book signing, he wasnt traveling alone and could had too much stuff for the Mooney or there may be stipulation that he has to travel commercially when with other employees.

When he travels with his staff, due to contract/station rules, he can not fly in his plane. He hangs out on the weekends at PDK and is a avid GA supporter. He does make it clear on his show and in person, how he hates the unions, specially airline unions.

For those of you familiar with PDK he did a lot of his training with Steve Shanner, who him self has quite a reputation. Anyone remember him? What a peace of work he is. Is his school still in business?

Though, I do not agree with every thing he says, I do enjoy his show.

I think Shaner is still around. He's the guy that had the $14,000 private pilot course like 10 years ago. When I was doing my CFI back in the 90s he came up on the list of 3 guys that the Feds said I could use for my checkride....my instructor(who was a very straight-laced military sort) said that under no circumstances would I do a CFI initial with Shaner. I guess he had spoken to him about it in the past and thought the guy was way to intense.

So, yes, Steve Shaner has quite the rep. But it's my understanding, in the interest of being fair, that he won't turn you loose unless you can do it.

Shaner, the man, the myth, the polyester...

Stay away, far, far away. A buddy of mine used to work for this guy. One memorable story about him was a checkride where Mr. Shaner failed a guy on his instrument oral for not being able to draw the various approach lighting systems available. Another instance had him failing a private student because he couldn't draw a Vg diagram. Bear in mind, these were students from other schools that drew his name from the FAA as a designated examiner. If you went to school at his school, you got questions like "What two colors are on a typical civilian, airplane airport beacon?"

From a personal standpoint, before I knew better, I attempted to get a job with his school. Back in '04, I had a CFI/II/MEI and about 400 hours. He looked at me, WADDED UP my resume right in front of my face, and told me that he didn't even want to look at me until I had 1500 total time and 1000 dual given.
