Looking for the best method to teach students NDB course tracking on approach.

Having GPS moving map sure doesn't encourage anyone to use this primitive method much either.

Thanks,

Push the head, pull the tail.

RMI's have made them pretty straightforward. Have them try one with a fixed compass card........FUN !

I learned "Heads Fall, Tails Rise"

Everytime I've had to think twice while flying an NDB approach, that really seemed to help me. The biggest thing to teach after that, is how to position the aircraft as to make the tail rise, or the head fall.

That's the most confusing thing I've ever heard! :D
You got to be kidding me?! Ok, actually lets break this down a little bit more, so I don't sound completly crazy!

When your flying inbound, you want to place the head of the needle on the desired bearing. If your flying outbound, you want the tail to be on the desired bearing.

To intercept a bearing, simply place the head where it will "fall" to the bearing, or the tail to "rise" to the bearing.

That simple. :D

See, thats confusing to me! Please explain so I can better understand it myself. Thanks!

The head falling confuses me, I don't get what you mean by that at all.

Push the head, don't get any simpler than that. Inbound on the 090 bearing, because of a right xwind you got pushed north of the 090 bearing and the head is on the 091 bearing, to correct, get on the other side (the 093 heading) and push the head of the needle back to 090, don't know how else to explain it.

Flying away from the NDB and tracking the same course on the 090 bearing outbound, with the same wind the tail would move up to the 089 bearing, you'll have to pull the tail back down by flying a 093 heading.

The beauty of it is you don't have to know what the wind is actually doing like I described, just push the head or pull the tail, works for the not so smart people like me, glad I never had to learn to use an ADF.
