There's a company here called Yackity Yaks that imports the Yak-18 from Russia. The Nanchang is a license-built copy of the Yak. I don't know which if either is better.

You're thinking of Yakity Yaks, and they are CJ-6 guys. www.yakity.com

I've seriously considered buying a CJ--both flyable and one as a project. As a personal toy, I think it's one sweet ride. But now, I'm just a bum and would only consider buying a real project (like a gear-upped one, depending on the damage). Someday perhaps I'll rise above the poverty level, and then we might think about buying new tires for my truck! An airplane is certainly out of the question for a while.

Unless you have the ability to do a lot of the labor, and some expertise in importing and certifying airplanes like this, you'll most likely be better off going through someone else. Aircraft Sales of Central Ohio and Yakity Yaks pretty much work side by side for a reason. There's also a few smaller companies that import them, but may not get them flying with a CofA in the country.

The CJ will probably not appreciate much anytime soon. In the late 90s, the prices of flying CJs tripled in a two year span. I really wish I would have bought myself one back then--I'd be rich!

If it was me, I'd start by calling up the established importers. Just importing one is a LOT more work than I'm afraid you have in mind. You might also want to look at the Yak-52, the prices for such are significantly lower, even if it isn't much of a touring airplane. But if you're looking for an airplane to make the seat belt point at the canopy--you don't need a CJ-6.

I think we may be missing somthing. It doesn't appear he's from the states.

Hence our recommendations to come to the States to get one!
