Minitour,

So the real problem you have with this guy is that he has no work ethic and is remiss in his duties as a student? I can see that as a problem, I had students that did the same thing.

I even had one student ask me why she had to learn about weather, since it was airplane flying that seemed to be the task at hand. LOL! Ummm, it's the medium in which you'll be flying in?

Instead of recommending to this guy that he not get a 737 type, why don't you challenge him to get one? Then you can lay side bets with him and your instructor buddies as to whether he will be successful or not. Think of the money you can make. Maybe enough for YOU to try for a type.

Good luck, and let me know how it turns out.

I don't know if that's the extent of my "problems" with this guy.

Don't get me wrong, I like him as a person outside of school and flying. He's a hoot to hang out with (did I just type hoot?).

but man....if I have to hear "my daddy" ONE MORE TIME!

haha it's like every other thing out of his mouth!

Oh well...

Thanks for letting me vent.

*edit*
I like the idea of laying bets on him...but I'd still probably use the cash for twin time. I don't see any point in getting a type at this point in my "career"...unless that space shuttle type is available

Hey Mini,

Remember that kid from Caddyshack that played the judge's nephew? I think his name was Spalding. Anyways, that is what came to mind when I read your post.

This reminds me of two people I flight instructed with. One was a girl from a very affluent part of town where I am from. (for the record, I lived on the other side of the tracks). Needless to say, her folks were very well off. She used to prance around talking about how "daddy" paid for all of her college, her car, and for her apartment. He also gave her 10K for her job at a regional, and this was during a time when you really didn't have to pay either. She explained to everyone in great detail how he gave it to her and how now she was finally going to be an airline pilot. Well, I couldn't stand it anymore. I looked up at her and said "for 10 grand I guess they'll hire anybody". It kind of took the wind out of her sails. Now, I'm not picking on her because she's a woman or becuase she comes from a rich family, but rather because of her attitude. Specifically how she had to call and ask for a bigger allowance because it was so hard to make it on a flight instructors pay.

The other guy had a brother who was a chief pilot somewhere. We were constantly reminded of how he doesen't need to build multi-time and he is just there waiting for a class date. Convienently studied the company's manuals and ops specs while he was "on-duty" at the school. Also reminded us of how their dad was a captain at one of the majors. Well, this guy went far, right up until 9/11 hit. Again, it was his cocky attitude that was the reason nobody liked this guy.

The best thing to do is to ignore these people. Let him talk. Nothing you can really do. These are usually the first people who will fail in the industry and point to some other excuse as to why flying didn't work out for them.

In the meantime, actions speak louder than words. Keep maintaining your level of professionalism and maybe this guy will learn something from you.

BTW, this would be fun. Somehow, offer to buy him a couple of hours in a 737 sim now. Offer to go sit right seat with him, but don't offer to fly. Let him show you how he can "handle" this airplane. Maybe it could deflate his ego a little bit.

Heck, I would almost offer to do this with him. Think he would mind sitting in a 757 sim instead?

YOU are not your daddy.

And YOU still are a sucky newbie with limited skills.

Unless you're bringing your daddy along to fly the plane. Maybe you should.

Watch the steam come out of their ears.

All this whole discussion means is that he wants to be one of the "Pay for Training" Southwest Pilots. They still require a certain amount of PIC time and experience even after you PFT.

CAsyndrm,

SWA pilots pay $0.00 to SWA for a type. Therefore there is no PFT at SWA.

You Sir, are showing your @ss along with your ignorance. Nice job!
