What type of pilot are you?

  • A. I will do anything to save my job, even if it means harming the future negotiating strength of the profession.
  • B. I will do anything to help the profession, even if it means the sacrifice of my current job.
  • C. Whatever dude.
A profession is an occupation that requires extensive training and the study and mastery of specialized knowledge, and usually has a professional association, ethical code and process of certification or licensing.

A job is your principal acitivity in life that you do to earn money.

Which I've been told by most of my ALPA reps (previous airline) was WAY too idealistic and would never work in today's society.


Why do you ask?

Pilots fit the definition professional for sure, and by dept of labour definitons as a skilled worker. Skilled worker do not require extensive formal education and there are not classified as knowledge workers like other professions, such as Doctors, Engineers, etc. BTW to answer the Multi choice question you have to establish what is the situation while making the decision. Am I unemployed and take a low paying job to feed my family, or am I making $250K/yr and have $1M in the bank. The answers will be different.

You don't need formal education to be a professional that is all I was saying. Fits into the thread. BTW the college degree will become less and less relevant as the worldwide pilot shortage continues to grow.
 
The choices are stupid.

"A" and "B" are absolutes that are offered as viable options even though it's obvious they were written to make a statement, and not gage ideology.

"I will do anything..." is an invitation to paradox-ville. "Anything", you say? Hmmm. I can think of a few things that you wouldn't do. The premise is that the end justifies the means and that extremism is the path to enlightenment. Slip another noun or two in there and you've got an al qaeda recruiting message.

"help the profession" is another subjective trap. Is changing Age 60 helping or not helping the profession? Discuss...

Write your congressman and senators! Make it a real letter, on real paper, and follow it up with a call to their LD. My congressman's LD was very helpful and indicates there's nothing on their radar addressing the stuff the FAA sez they need.

Like I said, ALPA reps always tell me this ideology is too severe in our current socioeconomic climate.

Are you trying to say you can finally afford a refill on you Viagra prescription? If so, can I have some?

Sadly, Viagra only makes me taller.

So I stick with purely organic means to get wood:

  • Finding an un-read newspaper.
  • Having Training displace me from a trip.
  • F/A's calling up front to say, "There's lots of First Class meals left...want three?"
  • Layover hotels with free breakfast buffets.
  • BayWatch re-runs on my HDTV.
  • Sharpshooting my November schedule.
  • My birthday, when my wife says, "Ok, ok...since it's your birthday, I guess I have to.."

And BTW - Yip, as usual you're a complete tool. Save your "you only need to be a high school clown to fly for an airline" mantra for another time. There is a reason FDX, CAL, SWA, UPS, (name the major du jour), etc...either require or "highly prefer" a college degree. I won't bore everyone else with continuing any further...you get my drift.

BTW the scrappy, 7% of the pilots hired at SWA did not have 4 yr degrees. And why do most pilot getting hired have college degrees? The answer is most simple, most pilots applying have college degrees. That should even make sense to a clown.

Seriously, I can't think of another job that has this many days off and still be able to consider myself "full-time".

The money is another issue (as in: it sucks).

When I got into it, I was (back when the average Legacy CA - including my dad - was pulling down $200k a year plus, and that was BEFORE the big gains by UAL and DAL).

Now I'm simply in too far to go do something else unless I have to.

It's either fight the companies into either paying us a decent wage, or force them out of business if they can't afford to pay a decent wage.

Either way, I either have a job that pays a good wage, or I'm forced to do something else. If enough people felt this way, it would put a LOT more pressure on airlines to compensate their employees reasonably.
