MU-2 So Loud?

I know that an MU2 has a direct-drive turboprop and that is one of the main reasons that it is so loud on the ground (because it's idling at a log more RMPs than say a King Air) but there has to be another reason why they are so loud. Can anybody help me out?

You have about 6 inches of stack aft of the T wheels. Plus the exhaust doesn't make a 180 degree turn prior to exiting the engine as it does on the PT6.

Just put your fingers in your ears. We call it the MU2 salute.

LOL! Just because I like the man's music doesn't mean I participate in his, errr...extracurricular activities!

And if you want to talk about ugly sh!t, you have to look no further than Gulfstream's line of planes, although I'll grant you the G200 looks a lot better than that flying phallus, the GV, and its less endowed brother, the GIV (or 550 and 450 - whatever the hell they're naming them now).

Humm....I thought the G200 was pretty ugly myself. But of course not as bad as the ASTRA (err G100). Now thats UGLY.

but hey, even if ugly...if it pays the bills...its OK I guess.

As a proud and deaf garrett driver I will give you the answer I think is right.

I am pretty sure it is not the props. Figure approx 2000 rpm at 100% on the speed levers would be 1400 RPM at 70%. Those aren't really high numbers to generate the high pitched whine you hear. I think they are so noisy is because 40,000 is the compressor speed at 100% and 28,000 RPM at low speed. The first compressor wheel sits about 12 inches from "open" air, so any noise it makes comes right out the big opening in the front. Someone has also told me that the noise is from the gearbox, which could also make sense, based on the RPM's and the reduction necessary. From behind the engine isn't really that noisy, it is all relative.
