Hey all. Looks like I may be moving to ATL in the very near future. I've been working down there for almost three years but really dont know the area well at all. I'm looking for a little advice as far as towns to be looking in. I know a lot of my co-workers live in Newnan or Peachtree City. Other than that the only thing I really know is to stay away from the College Park area. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks

I live down in Newnan and love it. It really depends on what you're looking for, though. The south side (Peachtree City, Newnan, Fayetteville, Senoia, Griffin, etc...) has a quiet suburbs feel to it. The north side (Alpharetta, Roswell, Vinings, etc...) is much more busy and crowded, with more of a "city-life" feel to it. I can't stand the north side because of the traffic, but lots of guys like it because they can't stand the quiet suburban life on the south side. Also, north side is much more expensive than the south side. You can get a 2500 sf house in Newnan for a little over $200k, but the same house will cost you over $300k in many places on the north side. PM me if you have any questions. I grew up down here, so I know the area pretty well.

Stay away from PTC. It is a movie set with nothing behind the facade. I recommend further to the southwest, the Newnan - Sharpsburg area.

I am in Senoia. We moved here a few years ago from TX and it is not that bad. We are in a great neighborhood. Schools are OK. The area is developing nicely. The value of our house has gone up 80 K in two years and with the growth I am sure it will get better.
It is a good area to raise kids. The only down side to this area is that you will probably see everyone you know at dinner and Walmart. Other than that I would say it is a good move.
If you want some more info on the area, PM me.

Take a look at the Northwest side (West Cobb county - Kennesaw, Acworth). I've lived here for about 18 mos. and we really like it. It is a suburb feel (much like PTC, Newnan) but with rolling hills and a lot of horse stables and riding. It takes me about 45 minutes to drive to the employee lot (most traffic conditions).
It has great schools and the homes haven't gotten too expensive yet (like Alpharetta, Roswell).

Good Luck

Avoid anything that will require you to drive on GA 400. Personally, I found the southside was really rather boring and I didn't care much for the scrubby underbrush and flat terrain. The northwest part tends to remind me more of home so I tend to like it better. As far as traffic goes, if you go too far north it's going to be bad at certain times of the day, but 285 around the west side very rarely backs up significantly.

Im from Alpharetta and you couldn't pay me to live back on the southside. I lived on the southside for 3 yrs. I have spent 25 yrs in Alpharetta and have really seen the change. It went from a sleepy little town in the early 90's to more of a hustling suburb with a city like feel in the mid 90's. Yes the trafffic is bad I will give you that, but there are many more pro's than cons IMO. Plenty of places to eat (some very nice restaurants), plenty of places to take kid's (I have a 4 yr old son that lives with me when Im in town) and lots of entertainment. The area has some of the best public schools. Look at the GA test scores North Fulton/Alpharetta is always ranked at or near the top. I guess why I really like ALpharetta is that I'm a native and there are not many of us left. Another downside is it's hard to find even a 2 bedroom newer condo for less than about 200K. Any questions feel free to ask.

I hear the Vinings area is pretty nice and not too outrageously expensive. Again, you will deal with the traffic no matter where you go...

There are some great places within :45-2:00 of ATL, don't get boxed into "Base Housing" south of the airport!! For the most part you'll only drive it once or twice a week(sure beats commuting). There are some beautiful mountain areas just over an hour to the north. I have to agree, GA 400 is the worst of the major highways in and out of Atlanta. I-985/575 take you to some very nice areas north of town.

Very true. There is a reason there is traffic in the area. It's a very nice place to live so a lot of people move there hence all the traffic. I park at the Mansell Park and Ride, then ride the bus to North Springs Marta Station (about a 7min bus ride) and ride the train from there to the airport. Takes about 1hr 15min from walking out my door in Alpharetta to stepping foot on the airport. This of course takes longer if you drive it. I like riding the train because I can read or listen to my ipod and relax while zooming back traffic jams. I have found a way to make the train ride relaxing.

Jasper, GA Pickens County is a very nice area off 575, kinda in the mtns. Probably would take you and 1 hr 45 to make it to the airport from that area.

If you have kids, the Peach Tree City schools are rated excellent as far as the south side goes. However, Marietta has some excellent schools as well along with Alpharetta and Roswell.

I lived in Newnan for a year and I would say it wasn't bad. After a high school girl was shot and killed in our apartment complex, we decided to get out of Dodge and buy a house on the northside. Lived in Woodstock for 2 years. All said, my wife and I liked the north side much better. It really depends on what you are looking for. In general:

Northside is a lot busier, many nice suburbs to chose from, closer to the lakes and mountains, many indoor malls if your wife likes that(mine does). I cannot think of one big indoor mall on the southside. Doesn't have the same "Southern feel" that you'll get from driving around downtown Newnan.

However, I would agree, avoid having to use Georgia 400 to get to work. Traffic is busier and it takes more time to get to the parking lot. I drove 45 miles to the employee parking lot, and 85% of the time it took under an hour. In traffic at rush hour plan on doubling you normal drive time. I used to bid for late show trips, where you would start later around noon or so and finish later, 8pm or so. This way, traffic is rarely an issue. If you like the early morning stuff, go with the southside to avoid the headache of the highways.

Southside is for you if you don't want to be bothered with a long drive home from the lot. It is cheaper as well, but I found Woodstock to be priced comparably to Newnan. Peach Tree City is the higher priced suburb on the southside.

I believe before you do anything, simply rent a car for a day and drive down to Newnan, take highway 34 toward Peach Tree City and Fayetteville. Then check out the northside like Alpharetta, Marietta, Sandy Springs, Woodstock, Roswell, Kennesaw, etc. Good luck.

If you are single, or even if you are married and you and your wife enjoy urban living check out Virginia Highlands or Midtown. It is expensive but if you like being around other young professionals and going out to non-chain bars/restaurants/pubs etc then this is a good place to start. It is definetly the place to be if you despise suburban living where driving to get anywhere is required. If you have kids I am not so sure about the schools in the area so this would be a big factor to look at also.

Greetings..If I were you I would drive around the College Park area before making a decision. I live fairly near the CP train station, and I can tell you that there is a lot of new home construction going on. The area in general is changing drastically and there are a lot of homes for sale. I have very friendly neighbors who have lived in the area for years, not to mention it is extremely convienient as far as working at the airport is concerned.

Midtown rules especially if your single. If you have kids not so much. I ride the Marta straight to work the train runs ever ten mins.. And the women are Awesome espcecially with two huge colleges near by and the corporate legions of pencil pushers just looking for a good lay.

To heck with great schools and rolling hills. Honey, pack up the kids - we're moving to Midtown. NOT!! That would go over like a turd in the punch bowl with the Mrs.

First off thanks to all who have responded. I probably should have mentioned in my first post that the reason I'll be moving to ATL is that it looks like I'm heading for a divorce. That said I'll be looking to live cheaply. I'm curious if anyone can tell my what Smyrna is like. Thanks again.

Well if that is the case, then definetly move to Midtown or Virginia Highlands. Not trying to make light of your situation, god knows I have been through it myself and the best thing I could have done was moving to Midtown. Nothing better than meeeting tons of attractive, professional women to make you forget about the ex. You could probably find a small apartment to live in in Virginia Highlands maybe even rent a room from someone in midtown to keep your expenses low. It is worth it, and ditto on what Max Powers said.

Vinings rocks! Mid 20's-mid 30's type crowd with great places to eat...a mall close by...and everything else you could want. A little $$$$ though as stated...

Well I just had dirt cheap (free) unattached rebound sex from a girl I met at a local bar (Wild Wing On Winward Pkwy, Fake Boobs and All), my point being you can find anything you want in the Alpharetta/Roswell area. I'm about to go have a smoke and celebrate life!!!!!

In general, do a lot of pilots use the MARTA to get to the airport from the Northside? I heard rumors that it is dangerous???

Thanks

I hope it is not the same method used by that NWA employee that got in the news today :erm: .

. . . I think she was angered most by the mess, so if you clean up after yourself, it may be OK.

Marta is fine sometimes on weekends at late hours some of the drunks come out but they are fine and you may get hit up for dough every once in while but all-in-all much safer then driving the atlanta streets/hghwys by a lot.

I'm in the same boat, but ex still lives in Atlanta. She didn't like my girlfriend. Only takes 31 days if you file in GA.
