I’m interested to hear how many of you decided to move back in with your parents while working as a CFI. I plan to start soon; CFI ride in less than two weeks. I’ve talked to the CFI’s at our school, some chose to move back in with their parents. I may do this as well because funds will be tight. I just feel like I will be moving backward instead of forward moving back in with my parents. I’m twenty-two so it’s not like I’ve got five kids and two ex wives, but regardless I will feel like a moocher.

What are your experiences? Did you stick it out alone or take the help? What’s your advice on how to not become a “starving” CFI other than Ramon noodles? I’m honestly extremely excited to teach; I love to fly so I will enjoy see others pursue their endeavors. I’m just trying to think about the bumps in the road before I hit them.

Do whatever you can to save $$. I instructed full-time for a year, and my W-2 reported 10K for that year. You can't have much of a life on 10K (pre-tax). Maybe you can room with a bunch of other CFI's if you really don't wanna live at home?

Get a second job that pays the bills and get a roommate...anything to avoid moving back in with the fam!

I lived in a house with 4 others...heck, as a CFI I was never there anyways...

made about 20-25K. Made decent bucks teaching ground schools at night. that was key for getting through the slower months....kept me in beer money.

Forget getting a place of your own, you wont be there enough. DOnt sign any leases - you never know when the next gig comes along...dont need anything over your head. I rented my room week by week.

Moving back in with the folks????.......well I guess nothing REALLY wrong with, I just refused to do it!

gotta love this business!!

No **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**! Not able to afford living alone with a BS degree & a few years of flying experience. CFI's need a union. :D:p

If you don't want to live at home, get a bunch of roommates, and it is not so bad. My first year of instructing I made $7700 and lived with 5 guys. Rent was only $150 per person though. One guy was an accounting major, so he took care of organizing who owed what.

I know regional and corporate pilots who live with parents, why not CFI's?
Who says pilots aren't filthy rich?

Heading back home with the family is my plan in the spring. I'm going there whether or not a CFI job materializes for me.

Do you get along with your family well? Are you actually going to spend any appreciable time at home as a CFI?

No rent, cheap if not free food. A washer and dryer! I'm going to live like a king!

Yeah I get along with them great; I just wish I didn't need the help. It's a pride thing I think.;)

No Sh!t! ...:D :p

Hey Texan aviator,

I live in houston (next to Rice). Where did you get your degree from(bachelors)? UH, Rice. etc. Where did you get your training? PM if you want

Go for it man....I live with my grandparents and it works out great not having rent and other bills to deal with....

I got my CFI last November. Along with instructing, I work two other jobs and go to college full-time.
My roommate (another CFI) and I have nice apartment close to the airport which helps save on gas.

Explore your options and seek out some crash pads. Your obviously a responsible individual (being 2 weeks away from your CFI ride @ 22) so establish a budget for yourself and see what's out there.
Yea-- I live pay check to pay check, but it feels good to support myself financially.

Bottom line: Do what you think you'll be happy doing. Good luck with your decision and let us know how your ride goes.

Texan,

Where are you planning on teaching? I'm originally from H-Town and looking to possibly head back that way. Just wondering if you already had something lined up or not. Also, let me know how the crash pad search is going.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I’m not sure what I’ll do, either parents or live with some other guys. I will just explore my options. Take care…

Female nursing students.......they are the roommates you need to be looking for!! And when you make it to the regionals.......female flight attendents!!

Other CFI's and pilots are just too darned messy and lack the "entertainment " value!

Enjoy now, then when you do get married you wont be apt to get busted by the wife for diddling the "help". :D
