Could someone please explain how trips at NJs start, end, and how your overnights work.

Do you get called at home at the start of your seven days like being on airline reserve, or do you know the day before what time you are going to need to be at the airport?

When you're on an overnight do you have to have your cell phone handy at all times because you could get rescheduled? What if you are overnighting in PHX and you go climb camel back mountain and scheduling calls you and says you need to be at the airport in 1 hour, but you're at the top of camel back and there is no way you could make it to the airport in time. Are you in trouble?

Do you ever get home early in the middle of your seven day stretch or do they keep you out until 11:59 pm on the last day?

I am an eight year regional driver and am seriously thinking of taking a shot at Netjets (just had a new baby and the majors aren't looking so bright anymore). Any input would be greatly appreciated.

This has been covered quite a bit, but I'll give it another try.

If you are scheduled to work the next day, you will receive a schedule by 1800L the day prior. Anything on that schedule can change except for the show time. Once you acknowledge that time, the company cannot make it any earlier.

This goes for mid-tour as well. Prior to shutting you down at the end of your work day, you receive a brief for the next day. That show time included in your brief cannot be made any earlier than what is brief. So, the time between your shutdown on one day and the briefed show time for the next day is yours to do as you wish. Go climb Camelback, but be ready to go at your show time. You can turn your blackberry off (which many of us do) during this time and you are on your own.

I rarely get home mid tour. I live in the DFW area and have only had one mid-tour overnight. I have sat at home on day one, but not very often.'

If you are thinking about making the jump, get your resume in ASAP. Make your mink up about the job later. Just get the process going. If you know any pilots here, time to send them a 6 pack and ask for a rec.

Good luck.

Thanks. That answers a lot of my questions. I did a search of the forums. There is a lot written about Netjets. I didn't have time to dig through everything. So many of the threads devolve into geeky arguments that it is difficult to glean any information without hours of reading.

Thanks again for the quick answers.

I too was at the regionals for 5 years.... the system here at NJ is very good.. it is very pilot friendly companred to what you are used to and everything is automated (ie blackberry).... This place is ten million times better than any regional

To add to what Skyking said...

You know by 6pm the night before when you'll need to be at the airport. That's the start of your duty period, and it won't change.

Sometimes, if you choose to check your pager before you head to the airport, you may find your duty has been changed to "duty at residence" to a change in the schedule. You can choose to acknowledge that (there's a link on the Blackberry) and wait at home, or you can go with your original brief and go to the airport and wait for them to figure out what's going on. I'd rather be at home, thanks, so I accept those kinds of changes. (When I was driving 3 hours to work, and one of those came an hour before I got there, I didn't accept that change, since I'd already driven to work, and wasn't about to drive back. Then they either found something for me to do, or got me a hotel at my base, on their dime.)

In either case, though, your duty period started at your original scheduled start time. They can't change it in the middle of the night, and you wake up early only to find out your up-to-14-hour day is now starting 6 hours later. No dice. The rest period has to be scheduled in advance, and they can't screw with that later on. So they can (and do) change what you're doing with alarming regularity, but the start time is set in stone when you're briefed the day before.

When you're on an overnight do you have to have your cell phone handy at all times because you could get rescheduled?

Nope. See above. ;) Go climb that mountain! They're not going to call.

Depends on the week. Last tour, I got home at 11:15pm thanks to United's stellar service. (Was supposed to be home by 5:30...grrrr....) Sometimes you're home by noon, but typically it's mid-evening.

The company doesn't push it too late, because the penalty, paid to you, for getting you home after midnight is quite harsh: $937.50 for a first-year guy!

I was in exactly your shoes two years ago when I applied, after 7+ years at a stagnant regional job. This has by far been the best career move I've ever made. No regrets at all.

Sorry to hear you live in PHX. I'm dying to get out of here. Aint the same place it used to be.

Oh how things change...congratulations on the new baby. NJA is MUCH more "family friendly" than the airlines. You'll enjoy being a new parent much more here. Come on over.

See above.

here are some more NJ questions.
The reserve schedule pays more so does it go senior or junior?

When on reserve is one required to be in a domicile? What is the call out time?

There is no reserve schedule anymore.

The 7/7 goes pretty much to anyone who wants it.

The 15-day flexible schedule can be assigned to the most junior 10% of the pilots in each fleet and duty position (captain/FO), if enough people who want it haven't bid it. In this bid period, a few of the most junior folks were involuntarily assigned that schedule, but the vast majority on the 15-day got it because they wanted it.

The 18-day fixed schedule, which pays the most money of the three schedules, is strictly voluntary, and a maximum of 40% of the pilots in each fleet/seat can be on it. It goes by seniority.

When on reserve is one required to be in a domicile? What is the call out time?
No such thing as being a "reserve pilot," as I said. You'll know your show time by 6pm the night before a scheduled workday. It won't change. (Or, in the case of the 15-day schedule, you'll know at that time if the next day is a day off.)

They don't care where you live; just be at your chosen crew base by that show time!

There is a situation where you may be on "reserve duty" at a hotel or at your residence. It's infrequent, but it can happen to pilots on any of the schedules. You're on duty at that point, and you have to leave the hotel or residence within 30 minutes of being sent out. It really doesn't happen often, though. In my case, for example, I was briefed the night before my last day for a 10am showtime, for a noon airline flight home. They ended up booking a 2pm flight home for whatever reason, and updated my brief overnight to show two hours of "duty at hotel," to account for the later departure. It was my choice in that case whether to stay at the hotel or go with my original brief.

aeropaharoh, the 18 reserve shedule is given to all new hire's and can only be taken away during the flush bid once a year. all bids for the 15 day reserve and the 7/7 are done quarterly and its your choice to bid around or stay with what you have. reserve here is not like the airlines. you call in the night prior at 6 pm at home (15 day) and see what your doing (fly the couch or the plane). your either given a tour or you stay home and call again at 6pm. the 18 day is a full schedule given to you on the 15th the month prior. the "call out" concept is an airline thing once your given a show time the night before when you were given a brief (that 6pm call) just be at your show time which will be show at home, show at the fbo, or show at the airport for airlining to the plane. there are currently 100 different domiciles to choose from that is where you sit...

We no longer have a "reserve" schedule.

the schedules are:

7&7 self-explanatory

15 day flex. You know by 1800L if the next day is a duty day. There is a 10% premium in pay over 7&7

18 Day fixed. You know by the 15th the month prior what your dudty days are. There is a 20% premium over 7&7.

I am the 9th most junior in my seat and was awarded the 18 day fixed, which is what I bid.

Hope that helps.
