Does a "R.O.N" or trip into the USA as a required crewmember count against your max 35 days allowed in the USA?

Once you qualify as a foreign resident under the bona fide residency test, the 330 days does not apply. I have been told though that if you spent too much time back home (and caught their attention) that it could be argued that you were no longer a bona fide resident.
 
Since the salary is tax free, what can a first year FO reasonably expect from a standpoint of take-home pay on a monthly basis, and once you get it what on earth is their to do in Dubai?

I have been thinking about EK for a year or two, but since I have only been furloughed once this decade, I'm haven't been able to convince myself to move to the desert. There are lots of pros and cons so all the info posted here is much appreciated.
